Hi guys.

How does the road tax scheme get applied to kit cars? Is it based on engine size/year of original manufacture or more complicated?

And If I built a new engine and fitted it in a new parts car to get a new registration and ran it through an IVA inspection etc would it get the normal new car tax rate based on co2/km ratings and if so how is that calculated?

Cheers,

Virgil

It's based on engine size using the rates applied to cars registered before 1st March 2001. The current rates are:
Engine size (cc) 12 months rate 6 months rate
Not over 1549 £ 125.00 £ 68.75
Over 1549 £ 205.00 £ 112.75

The SVA/IVA test doesn't measure CO2 output and therefore you can't be taxed based on it.

Thanks, and sorry for late reply!!

So in theory, if I build myself from all brand new parts a gas guzzling 8 litre v10 twin turbo 4x4 for the school run I'll get a brand new plate but only £205 tax /year?

Love it!!
