I've decided to build this for my 4 year old grandson:

It's pretty well 1/2 scale, has an electric drive via a variable throttle, foot and hand brakes, light and a horn. 67" long and 23" wide and weighs in at 73kg.

The body's cut from 1/2" MDF and the build instructions, drawings for the 50 plus body parts and the mechanical and electrical gear are supplied by Real Life Toys at www.toylander.com.

I built RLF's Jeepster for my sons 22 years ago and under pressure from them I've bought the necssary bits to go one better for the grandkiddie and do the bigger and better jeep. The boys had the Jeepster for years, crashed it, rolled it once, burnt out a motor and eventually wore out the tyres, it covered miles and miles on all sorts of terrain.

I placed the order on Monday last week and despite the weather and Christmas post it turned up the day before Christmas Eve. We've had a very busy Boxing Day cutting out parts and hope to make decent progess cutting out the rest in the next few days. I'll post some pictures of progess.

Ahem...

If you need a motor, wiring loom and the like, I have an old motability scooter if you would like it.

My lad has a toylander, all thanks to this very place.

They are superb, and it gets used each time he visits without fail.
Truly an amazing piece of kit, good luck with the build- you will find richard amazingly helpful

Eta, wire it up so the motor stope as soon as you lift off- having a four year old panic, and looking for a different pedal to stop with is not a good idea, especially in an emergency

I am wanting to build one of these soon - so if the offer is not accepted for the bits could I be cheeky?

With pleasure- Baedeker near mk- although I now live in Dubai.

Wheels would be usable too. Lights and loom can be straight transplants, motor, speed control etc,
It's quite an old bus and has handlebar steering so would need the appropriate bits to sort steering, but it's bloody quick and free to a good home

My Dad scratch built me the model T version over 20 years ago. It started with Sinclair C5 power and ended up running a 3.5HP Honda. Must try and dig out some pics.

Good luck with the project, I hope you find it as enjoyable as my Dad did (I loved it too and was the envy of all my friends)

My wife has become a "Christmas Holiday" widow - I've spent most of the last few days shut away in the garage, I'd forgotton how enjoyable building these things is. I've been fortunate in that one of my son's friends is a carpenter and he kindly leant me a number of tools until the New Year, which has made life a lot easier. We've decided to upgrade and go for the twin motor option so I'll be on to Richard at RLT early in the New Year.

We've worked out hw to make an appropriate size shovel and axe to strap to the side, but suitable size weaponry is being a problem. If anybody has any ideas I'd be pleased to hear from you.

Emsman - thanks for the offer for the motor etc, but I've bought one already and the other will have to match.

That is one cool toy... I would have done anything for one of those as a kid, the young lad is going to absolutely love it! Get some photos up of the build progress smile

Excellent, I had a plastic pedal version when I was little while living in Germany (dad was in the army). Had to leave it when we returned to Blighty as it wouldn't fit in the Austin 1100. frown

Why was this thread moved? The car is still a toy/model, not really a kitcar?

As to where this thread is best placed - is it a kit-car or a (semi-scale model)? I agree that it's not a kit car as most here would think of a kit car, but it is pretty well 5ft long, so it doesn't sit too well with the plastic/diecast/RC models on the Scale Model Forum. I'm happy to move it elsewhere if that's the general opinion.

As to progress, I've been very busy ever since Boxing Day. I've only mis-cut a couple of panels and most parts have gone together very well. It's apparent that the box-like structure will make it very tough and able to cope with all that a kiddie can throw at it. Here's a few photos taken over the last few days.

They are plenty strong enough for your little angel, trust me.
They also have a low centre of gravity so hard to tip, and weigh sufficiently that you really notice it when the aforementioned angel runs straight into you!!

It would be a piece of cake to make either the 50 cal browning or the 30 cal version out of dowel / broom handle and some glued together left over ply and then painted

Or you can go full metal eg...half scale 30cal

As you can see though, it would be dead easy to knock this up out of wood.

Because gainful employment is so slow this time of year I've been able to crack on. The body is now complete and I'll start the filling, sanding and priming this weekend. Everything has fitted like to dream other than one of the front wings, which had to be down to my cutting or fitting, but I've sorted it out and all is well. For those of you who want to know the body's 60" long and 28" wide and the bumpers and spare wheel will add about 6 more inches to the length. God help anyone or any car the little chap runs in to.

I atach a few photos showing the current state of play. I've just dry placed the lights and motors to show the appearance. The screen is only temporarily fixed so that any adjustments can be made now prior to painting and I've only fitted the spare to ensure correct alignment of the holes.

Building a 0.50cal gun would not be too difficult, except for the bit with the holes around the barrel. Any ideas chaps?
