I'm looking to build my first kit car (a GKD Legend6 to resurect my BMW 328i !) and wondered what the general opinion on tools required for a full build were.

At the moment my tools are limited to socket sets and a 12v impact wrench. So I probably need to buy in a few bits and pieces to say the least!

Drill and rivet gun suggest themselves, perhaps a riv-nut setting tool as well. A digital multimeter would be good to. other than that I would buy stuff as you find you need it. The Halfords Pro range is very good value for money, and if you break soemthing they will change it FOC.

To add to singlecoils suggestions i'd say,

1) some A-Frame style stands to rest the chassis so it's at a comfortable height while building.
2) Trolley jack and axle stands always handy, while building and maintenance post build.
3) Hole saw kit and files for cutting body work.

Brilliant choice of car Pete and GKD are a great company !
On the rivetter how about investing in a cheapish air compressor and an air rivitter so much easier /quicker and less rsi! Also some good quality titanium drill bits .

Just to extend the second point - I would advise you get 4 axle stands of the same model, so they end up being an equal height (if you need to get it all nice and level).

Depending on how much you want to change from the build, also an angle measurer and plenty of steel/aluminium rulers. And vernier callipers (digital would be fine).

+1

For a home build, a small compressor and a few average quality air tools will be very useful, riveter, ratchet gun and maybe a drill (if the tank is big enough). Also a 4.5" grinder and cutting discs, mainly for removal of stuff from your donor car to bench but also in your build.

Thanks all. My garage lacks power & light (it's one of these stupid modern houses where they put a flat on top!) so I have to run an extension cord from the house. I guess a petrol generator would be handy on a number of levels. For the sake of my neighbours I do want to keep noise down (or at least to the weekends).
