triumph spartan 2 plus2
Discussion
That photo is of my car, a Triumph Spartan +2, which I built originally on a new Spartan chassis using a Triumph Herald 13/60 Estate as the donor car.
I later rebuilt it using a 2 litre Ford Pinto engine, a Capri gearbox and an Escort back axle. In this form I raced it for a couple of seasons in the 750 MC Kit Car Challenge.

The original Triumph Spartan was built on a Triumph Herald Chassis.
When Spartan began to make their own chassis they also made a longer version which they called the +2.
They made a variant which could use a beam axle rather than the Triumph swing axle. This had wider rear wings too.
When they redesigned the car to use a Cortina donor they made a small number of hybrid intermediate cars which used bits of the old Triumph version along with new parts but these were not fully developed and not easy to build. The later Cortina Spartans were totally different from the Triumph Spartans and quickly made them obsolete as far as the factory was concerned. All the Cortina Spartans were +2.

I had the Spartan for about 10 years in Triumph and Ford forms.
The flip front is non-standard and my own conversion as is the opening boot.
The Ford engine was totally stock back when I sold it in 1992 but I've no idea what might have been done to it in the intervening years.
This is me racing it at Mallory Park

Hi thanks for the information
That's why all the Spartan's I looked at for spares are different
So is this the only one with a flip bonnet and removable front.
You made a smart job with the bonnet it's better than the standard Spartan to work on.
Also tried to fit a standard Spartan roll bar but there is no place to bolt it to on the body, have cut the mountings off on the body to fit the tubular steel roll-over bar or is some thing missing on the standard spartan roll bar.
If you ever come to Rotherham contact me if you want to take your old car for a spin. Thanks Trevor

I worked for Spartan Cars in the late 70's. The Plus 2 had 6" added to the centre of the chassis (+ body, doors and hood). Also the Spartan chassis was wider than the standard Triumph chassis at the front by about 1 1/2", so the anti roll bar needed adjusting to fit.The original Triumph Spartan was built on a Triumph Herald Chassis.

The chassis for the beam axle was made for customers who wanted to have a different engine/drive train combination, but the front suspension remained Triumph - I built one for myself with a Rover V8 and Capri 3 litre back axle.
The Cortina based Spartan replaced the Triumph based version in 1979.
