Road Legal Wing Mirror

I have trawled t'Internet a bit but failed to find an answer and figured the kit car community on here might be the best place for a good answer.

Is there a legal requirements for a certain square cm of mirror in wing mirrors? I am interested in getting some SPA design type mirrors but there are a lot of different one available and clearly this is for a reason

I still want to be able to use the car on the roads and get it MOT'd as it is not an out and out trackday or competition car yet!

I very much doubt that you would fail an MOT on a non-compliant mirror. What are you fitting it on?

Many, many kit cars are fitted with an IVA compliant mirror for the test and have them replaced with something more to the owner's taste (that wouldn't pass) immediately afterward.

MOT doesn't inspect for compliance with construction & use regs, just for roadworthiness on the day.

only requirements that I know of are that if it stick past the outside of the car it has to collapse in under certain pressure, and that they have to be adjustable from inside the cockpit for IVA. If its inboard of the body work then Fixed is OK but still have to able to adjust it from inside, without rolling the window down either.....

I don't think the OP is asking about mirrors on a kit car - think he's talking about modding a registered, road legal car for use as a track-day car, so he shouldn't need to be concerned about IVA.

Don't know about that last bit Clive - just checked the IVA manual:

IVA Manual said:

11. The obligatory offside mirror fitted to a vehicle with a right hand or central driving position must be adjustable from the driving seat. Alternatively, if knocked out of alignment, it must be capable of being returned to its former position without the need for adjustment.

No mention of not being able to roll down the window - I'd be having a very long (and polite) discussion with the tester if he failed me on that!!

Don't get ones with concave glass.

My car has the smallest possible mirrors, and the glass is concave - presumably to see more somehow.

But they're a bit rubbish. I need to change them.
