Does anyone have a design or vision for there own Car to be built but not the finances i know we probably all do but i'm talking about people who have designs not just dreams??. I mean a complete new car not a kit car available to buy.

What for? Are you looking for a project or are you one of those people?

How detailed? I build my own personally.

Going to be opening a workshop back end of the year and looking at maybe setting the garage up for doing something like this but looking for something different than the usual kit cars.

There is a lot of people with visions but not many viable projects financially in the real world. There is quite a broad spectrum of cars available already in the kit car world, something for everybody really. But with IVA and registration costing circa £1,000 per car and used Elises and 7's from £7k it's a hard business to crack successfully at the moment unless you are very very clever.

Totally agree Fury just wondering if there is still a place for doing that and if worth while having part of the workshop for this. At the moment it's just a matter of weighing things up thanks for replys though.

If you want to look at open wheelers...I may or may not have every single little last measurement required to build a 1966 Brabham F1GP winning car.

Including access to the moulds.

So lets see if I've got this so far:

  • You have a workshop and want a product to make in it.
  • You don't have an idea for a product so you want to team up with someone who does.
To answer your question I suspect that a huge portion of people on this site have had an idea for their own car. Some will not have thought very much about it, just a few concepts along the lines of body X with mod Y and engine Z etc. Some will have a body shape, chassis design and suspension layout planed, by which I mean they have actually got a realistic shape, not just a styling concept, and they have actually got a chassis or suspension at least partly designed. A very few might even have got a few CAD parts or even actual parts made or have perhaps done some serious analysis of suspension, aerodynamics or a properly stressed chassis.

Your easiest route is to find an existing set of molds and base your car on those. Alternatively aim for a very simple but pretty shape; Google the Byers CR90 (it doesn't have any doors which really helps costs and complexity) for an example that could be resurected as a weekend road and trackday car. If no one else does I might one day...

One of the Sammio Spyder bodies available is very similar to that of the Byers although the grill isnt right and the headlamps are slightly different.

I think if you wanted to do one though, you may want to consider a slightly more powerful base than that the Sammio uses! hehe

Thats the Herald isnt it? That low to the ground everything seems fast. :-)

What about the Lightburn Zeta Sports? Not sure if you got that wonderful car over there in the UK. Honestly, if you took a Sammio and thought...I really have to fit this entire car into a suitcase...you would have the lightburn zeta sports. It was made by a company who made cement mixers iirc.

Ok, if the sports version isnt to your taste...perhaps packing the family for a run in the standard model...

There is always room for kitcar friendly garages who do not turn their noses up at wierd cars, maybe first just get involved and build yourself a good reputation as a kitcar friendly repair business and see where that takes you. Do a few open days etc. And you will maybe get some ideas from the cars which come through your doors.

We are curently in the process of designing an Aluminium Monocoque, bike engined RGB race car, that would be capable of being road legal and also modular so it can be built to suit mid or front engined applications, different roll cages and engines and also take an aero package if required. (its also designed for realistic manufacture and not Pie-In-The-Sky dreaming), the problem is we don't have the money (at them moment or a workshop (other than my grandparent garage) to build it in.

We were going to start looking for a workshop soon and putting some money aside but we would love to get some help and share the project if you're interested.

Were abouts are you based?

The workshop is in the East Lancashire area as i've been given alot of support and will get ongoing support so only fair to keep it there.
