Being the proud owner of a MK Indy with a Blackbird engine I wanted to see if any other Blackbird engined car owners were on here. There seems to be very little banter, even having searched extensively.

I'm not snobby, if you have a Caterham, MK, or any other 4 wheeled vaiant with a Blackbird engine just let me know, I'm very lonely ;o)

It would also be great to hear what your car means to you and any particular issues you have with it.

Me, I'm still buzzing after 6 months of owning mine. A brilliant 2009 build using a '98 carbed engine (not built by me, thanks to JH). Me, I have added a huge silencer to, to bring it under 98dB, Accusump to stop it popping on track, and it's booked for a full Dynojet set up in May.

Over to you, just add your name to this list of Blackbird engined car owners:

I did have a blackbird powered westy. It was a dry-sumped 01 injected running a trick-shifter for clutchless up and down changes. Fitted after I found a false neutral and lunched a couple of gears.

Fun car which I enjoyed lots other than the abysmal westfield build quality.

Not a current owner, but I'll let you off for that. What exactly is a trick shifter.

Great fun on track when banging down the box into a corner. They help changing gear mid-corner too (generally a no no) as there is very little interruption to the drive.

BUT, some have found they actually wear the box more. Who knows? My perspective is that they reduce the dog to dog contact which is the primary cause of wear in a BEC. I'm not a gearbox designer though...

Cable will be more sloppy. Rose jointed bars and pivots is the most direct system.

Enjoy. Holeshot (Jack) rebuilt my box after my 'issue' with the false neutral. At the time he was building a 'busa engine that would put out 750bhp nuts Interesting chap to talk to.

That looks like an awesome project - Is there a build thread anywhere?

Interesting blower setup/ position.

Cable? Why not just copy the Westfield design - no cables and a very positive shift.

Wow, this thread is a blast form my past. Thanks for resurrecting!

Good to see a few more Blackbird engined cars coming to life. It really is an excellent lump and such good value for money at the moment.

My MK Indy Bird is under the knife at the moment needing a bit of TLC on the clutch. Any tips on upgrading the standard clutch. I would ideally like to stiffen it up a bit and make it harder wearing. Thoughts?

I've not had mine for about 5 years now but IIRC Barnett kevlar clutches and springs were a common upgrade. TBH though the standard clutch was fine IME - if a little switch-like - in terms of longevity unless you started doing lots of standing starts. Pretty sure there is a master cylinder mod you can do too, to make it a little less switch like.

i,ll stick with the cable as only just finished fitting. tried a mechanical set up but couldnt seem to get rid of the free play, too much travel at the gear stick. i am now after a master cylinder ,got a 0.75 slave cylinder. i am thinking of getting motorbike rear brake master cylinder to use for this.

Cheers.

I would be interested to hear views on the master cylinder mod you can do to make the clutch a little less switch like.

Any recomended suppliers of barnet carbon clutches and uprated springs etc that do a good deal?

Does anyone know what if any the external differences are between a rrw blade engine and a rrx bird. I'm thinking of doing a swap on my caterham if its a like for like change.
