I am in the process of fitting (finally) my front hubs and I have a bit of a problem.

I have new bearings both sides, but the bearings dont appear to fit the stub axles properly. Specifically the rear bearings on both hubs. I have 4 stub axles: one of which is brand new. One is an original axle, but with damage to the machined surfaces, and two are good used items. Two of them wont go through the bearings at all (one of the used ones and the new one) and jams up on the rear bearing, and the other two pass straight through the rear bearing without gripping it at all.

When I have done this type of thing before, the bearings were always a fairly tight push fit on the stub axle, otherwise the races spin on the stub axle and just wear out. Am I going mad or have I just got a collection of poor quality parts with crappy tollerances?

You need to be careful???

S1 Vixen needs a Drum braked herald upright and the correct stub axle for it (TR 4 - 6)

Their are different configurations of Upright , stub axle, bearing and not nice things can happen if you mix them up. You need to ascertain what you have first.

Hi Neil,

Late nighter?

Yes, I have herald drum brake uprights (both new - long story) and the stub axles are TR6 part no. 115763 from Rimmers. As far as I can tell they are identical to the originals (without the rust!). The bearings are TR-6 front wheel bearings.

The truth is I suspect the new stubs and the bearings a probably crap pattern parts with poor tolerances, whcih is why I bought a pair of used stubs, figuring they were more likely to be original parts. Its just got me a bit pissed off. I have been looking forward to doing this particular job for weeks, you know how it is.

Check the bearing ID. It wouldn't be the first time a bearing was packaged incorrectly. Look at the bearing number and contact a (local?) bearing house to see what they come up with for TR6 wheel bearings. Alternately, there are lisings, on the interwebz, from various mfgrs. Cross ref there.

Best of luck,
BH.

There WAS a batch of TR6 stub axles that were wrongly made by the supplier to the Triumph fraternity, I recalled mine..the supplier recalled and got a new batch made and supplied these as replacements, he tells me that he got less than 45% of the wrongly made items back.

I ,ll read it again but can't see bow it points to the stub axle, Adrians recall or not! If the new one, your previously used one and 2 acquired used ones don't fit then you have either been VERY unlucky or it's not the stub axle. I can not understand why people buy parts from Moss outlets. Most parts they supply are made i'n Willy Wonkas chocolate factory on Korea and are at best poor. I have only ever had 1 serious mechanical failure and it was a collapsed QH front wheel bearing at 75 mph on a motorway. Fortunately the car turned 90 degrees left and I stopped on inside lane facing oncoming traffic. Buy quality bearings from a specialist. PS even though one of your stub axles looks ok I would treat it as a service item and replace it, they are not expensive! only my opinion.

Steve my reasoning re the axles was that checking both bearings, if the axle appeared over size in one bearing it also appeared over size in the other bearing and vice versa, which seemed to me to indicate that the two bearings were the same, but the stub axles varied. Anyway, was pretty cross by that time which didn't help.

I have some time this afternoon so I am going to mic everything up afresh and work out what is really going on. Then I will probably have to start all over again.

As I said, disappointing, this was a milestone I was looking forward to.

Who should try for front wheel bearings and suspension bushes for my 1800s, I'm trying to avoid Willy Wonka or Micky Mouse for that matter.

SKF have a good web site or just take the lot down to your local branch of BRAMMER and ask for one of them made by NSK, SKF or FAG. They will probably be twice as much as Rimmer/Moss but Infinitely better quality than the no name bearings they supply. Watch out for fakes and avoid plastic cages.

Thanks for all the replies.

I finally got the hubs on at the weekend after several calls to the supplier. I even had the storeman going through the stock of axles to check for ones in spec before I got replacements.

Fit is now tight but OK, I think.

Still haven't solved the Anti Roll Bar issue though...........anyone?
