Rebuilding an essex 3.0ltr for my "M" and want to know the best cam to use for mild to fast road, don't want to loose to much torque low down but would like a little more lift in and out!
I await the wealth of your experience!
Cheers, Glyn.

Hi,

I have used 2 different camshafts in my Essex, Kent cams V62 and V63. I have described the differences on my Website http://www2.gol.com/users/tube/essex.html

V62 have 290 deg duration with ~9.5mm lift, V63 have 276 deg duration with ~11.3mm lift.

In short V62 gives higher peak power but you feel a bit of loss at lower revs, V63 give better low RPM power and in ordinary traffic I feel it is more useful, (I have measured better accelaration with V63).

I would recommend V63 and even more so if your cylinder heads have standard valves as you need better breathing to make use of the V62 and let it run up to 6500 RPM at least.

V61 is a lower performance cam and based on my experiences with V62 and V63 I wouldn't recommend it. V61, V62 and V63 can be used without any machining. Whatever cam you chose I would advice to dial in accurately and use offset keys to correct if its wrong, my V62 was ~6 degrees out and correcting that was easily noticed as increased power.

Regards Hans

Just what I was about to say - make yourself a cuppa, and get a comfy chair, but he is THE man when it comes to essex bits. I was going to go for one of the cams you mentioned, but his are all built for specific applications.

By the way, Pietro, are you going to Uxbridge on the 18th?

Oh, and if you're using a modified cam, make sure you replace the nylon timing gear with a metal one too!

Does that mean you'll be there in you M ? I'm going but not in the 3000S as I'm going with a mate in his Vitesse.

Would be good to meet and have a natter all the same - if you're free on friday Bucks TVRCC has a meet at the crows nest at Tring if you're free...

Cheers, Tony
