Another dumb question from me but I'm trying to work out which side is which for my non symetrical engine mounts (crossflow engine). I dare say it's obvious once you offer up the engine but I don't want to be swaping them around with the engine dangling above. Any advice very welcome.

if you place them onto the chassis points it should become obvious which way round they go.

And, if ours were anything to go by, the engine will be dangling around for ages while you swear at the mounts, biggrin

Also, I think the bolt holes in the engine only line up to the correct bracket, but can't be sure on that.

The engine mounts on my Vixen are both identical and according to my parts list they should both be right hand mounts (part no. 1463559) and were fitted to:

Cortina Mk2 1.3, 1.6 1967 - 1970
Cortina Mk2 Lotus 1.5 Twin Cam 1966 - 1970
Escort Mk1 940cc, 1.1, 1.3 1968 - 1974
Escort Mk1 1.6GT 1968 - 1974
Escort Mk1, 6 & 8 cwt Van 1968 - 1975
Escort Mk2, 6 & 8 cwt Van 1.1, 1.3 1968 - 1975

Thanks for the info - perhaps it's my eyes that are not symetrical!

My thoughts are that you are correct and the 2 are different, BUT I cannot remember which way round they are (I certainly carry 2 different ones) although later cars have 2 of the same.

I have a feeling that the later 711M block is a nadge wider than the earlier 691M block and has correspondingly slightly shorter mounts. When I swapped from a 691M to a 711M I tried to refit the original mounts and it wouldn't fit in the chassis. I sourced later mounts and all was well.
Can't remember if they were handed though!

It's a long time ago now but could have been longer one on the right hand side to tilt the engine, giving the carburetors clearance on the Lotus Cortina and carried through to all Kent engines for a while?

Apparently the engine mounts on ours were the same either side.

Its a 72 1600M, with a 711M block.
