Past few times when setting off for the first time ive heard a small knock clunk.. Feels and sounds at the front end... But havent looked yet...

Any suggetions? going to jack up tonight after work, check bearings, anti roll bar, shockers etc.. Hopefully find something obvious.

Hi Tim.

I replaced all except the one on the prop to diff (when i wrecked the rear diff bushes and reinforced cradle)

Worth a try tho :-)

I know you said front but, rear coil springs run very close to top pivot bolt, could be catching? mine did so I bent a little set into the top shock mounts to give more clearance and the botton shock mount was long enough to get a couple of washers between the upright and the shocker bush helping to push it out, away from the pivot bolt head.

Possible yes...

Its the first noise I've had since the diff bushes and 1500,miles from rebuild.

I'll have a look all over i guess :-)

? Do you reverse into a garage? as the rear shoes IF incorrectly set up will rotate and knock.
Information re top bolts, they ONLY go into the top casting one direction, front to rear, (I did see picture on here recently where the front and rear springs were mixed up too, as those would of clashed) OR they will clash with the spring.

Backlash will happen all the time...and is a repeatable...and the front pads will do the same.

Now I've looked and understand it better its not that bad,

I feel better about it anyway...

I do think however it didn't help that i was having a play with an Saudi a5 2.7tdi and pulled away. Not massively but pulled a cars length from 0-55 then i backed off... However that's pulling 2T!!

Took diff out and opened her up.... Struggling to feel or see any backlash other then normal...

I can't see any obvious wear patterns :-/

Checked the half shafts... Drive shafts... Prop uj for play and only found a tiny tiny bit in the prop to diff uj...

My only guess is the gearbox???

With the diff open I've locked up both drive flanges and tried; 1-pulling drive flange out and in - no movement

Locked up both drive flanges and turned front flange and has normal backlash...

3 got hold of the ring gear unit and tried moving up down in out etc, no movement.... :-/

But on Tuesday when i looked and turned the prop by hand car in gear and handbrake on) the prop flagged turned.it turned nearly quarter of a turn...

If you have found a tiny bit in your prop to diff flange...you have found your culprit!!

You only need a smallest hint of play to transmit itself as a nice klonk in a driveline. The diffs are pretty bullet proof and generally you will not detect any play in a diff by feel alone. The pre-load and the in mesh is pretty critical and needs to be set up properly... You can adjust out any wear in a diff in terms of taking up the pinion gear but I don't think this will be your problem.

I hoping it isn't the gearbox but will investigate better on Sat... Busy tonight getting laminate flooring to keep the Mrs sweet.

I was possibly thinking of changing the gearbox fluid and possibly putting some moly grease in to thicken it up a touch but now think its not the best idea.

Looks like Im gonna change the Ujs on the prop then that's all of them done.

Pleasantly surprised at the diff internal :-).

T appears when i changed the diff fluid i may have put too much in... I put a litreand it didn't dribble out so put a bit more in ti it did... Looks like the drivers side drive shaft flange is leaking. Im wondering if putting a litre only in would be fine as its a slow weep??
