1800S Trunnion and caliper
Discussion
Trunnion
I'm replacing the trunnions on my 1800S, the replacement parts I have are giving me some concerns, first, the "top hat” section bushes are a tight fit (needed to drive them in with a hammer) and secondly the steel tube spacer is even tighter (needed to close it in the vice), it is my opinion that the bolt and tube spacer should remain stationary in relation to the wishbone whilst the top hat etc rotates around the spacer, am I correct?
Caliper
Whilst removing the calliper two thickish washers fell out, do these go back between the caliper and the support bracket to centre it on the disc?
Thanks
Kit

I did my trunions a while back, but I seem to recall that thetop hats were a tight fit, but the tube went in smoothly. It was all a very tight fit in the lower wishbone bracket and I did have trouble with the large washers fitting.
regarding the discs, I really cant tell as mine all came in bits and I have yet to fit the brake pads. I would fit it all back together and see if it needed centering. The washers you refer to could be from the back of the bolt heads that go through the mounting bracket.
I notice you are in Herts. I live near Stortford and I would appreciate taking a look at your car to help with re assembly of mine sometime, (series one) if you dont mind.

I'm in Harpenden, but I also pound the M25 North East quadrant most days. You’re welcome to come have a look, I was trying to get to Classics on the Common (Harpenden) on the 25th July but the day job is slowing my progress! Does your series one have the last of the MGB engines or the Ford?

When I bought my Taimar it had some after market vented discs and four pot calipers fitted (for sale). Discs were scored and they pulled like buggery so replaced everything with standard (TR6) stuff. Was surprised to find I needed washers, like you have, to centralise the caliper to disc.
I can't ignore the Harpenden location and mention of Classics on the Common ............
I post on the "classics" bulletin board occasionally and also live in Harpenden. I am currently trying to get my 3000M back on the road. It was last driven to our great local event in 1997. It is finally a rolling chassis and I will soon be looking for "volunteers" for the body lift.
I would be glad to make your acquaintance at CotC so please describe your car and I will come over and introduce myself. Above all, please try to have it ready for next week.

Mike, on that car the caliper hands are a matching set to the the 4 pot system, the spec of those 4 pots is to fit 15 inch rims and both caliper and hand get modified to fit those under the 14 inch rim. With the 1800S it is more likely that a previous own has swapped TR6 calipers and discs onto the car (as 1800's run with thinner discs and the aperture within the caliper suits those thinner disc) when the earlier calipers were not readily available (I might be wrong here the OP will have that info) then the calipers will need shimming.

Steve...I know the hands on Mike car are modified as it was my kit, and my understanding is that the OE spec on the 1800 is an earlier brake disc which is thinner and had a matching caliper which would not take a 1/2" disc (I found this out when I rebuilt the suspension/brakes on a 1800, the owner who had it from 11 months old and is as original as I have ever seen a TVR) As ever I bow to your better knowledge on these things....just my thoughts thats the reason for washers to the put the caliper in the correct place.

Adrian, what are the "hands" ? Part no. 25
If they have been modified to bring the 4 pots within a 14" wheel does this mean they're now wrong for my standard set up (other than requiring those washers)?
Have the caliper mounting holes been filled and re-drilled closer to the stub axle centre?

Yes and then NO...If you need to, chat it through with me on the phone.
