Hi Guys,

Well I picked my 3000M up on Saturday, she is very nice, however, there are a few problems already.

On the drive home the steering wheel felt like it was going to shake out of my hands once it got above 70mph, I've had all four wheels balanced and this has reduced the shaking but it's still quite bad...any advice!!!

also it does not like starting when the engine is hot...it starts from cold perfectly but if I stop the car and try and start it a few minutes later it is a pig to get it to start again!! any advice? (maybe something to do with the auto choke!!)

The fan heater inside the car doesn't appear to work either...

Any advice would be appreciated, also if someone could recommend a good garage in the Norfolk/Cambs area, where I could get someone to give her the once over, I would appreciate it.

Thanks a lot.
Mark

Hi Mark,

Steering problems could be due to the rack moving. Suggest that you contact Adrian at Exactly TVR - he does a replacement solid bush.

For engine problems give John Wade a call at JW Engineering on 01902 798303. Top bloke on Essex engines and does lots of upgrades & spares.

Welcome to the world of 'M's!

Thanks for the Reply,

Lots of people recommend Exactly TVR, looks like I've got some logistics problems to solve, the TVR is my only car, so if they need it for more than a day I'll be stuck in Coventry. Hmmmmmmmmm

Thanks,
Mark

The steering shaking could be the rack not bolted down, the rack mounting rubbers worn (if fitted, it may be on aluminium mounts), very badly worn track rod ends or the column bush.

Part way up the steering column (inside the engine bay) is a copper bush, which holds the column in place as it passes through the chassis, often this bush will pop out and up the column enabling the column to flex a lot.

Hot start issue sounds like a fuelling/carb issue, any old-timer type garage should be able to fix this. Is it still on the mechanical pump or does it have an electric one in place. If the latter it could be getting over-fuelled when starting alternatively it could be the auto-choke. You can get kits to replace the auto-choke with a maunal one.

Fan/Heater, is it just the fan not working or no hot or cold air. M series heating/ventillation systems are not very efficient (to say the least). On an M they are different to a Taimar as well. If its the fan not working I'd suspect an electrical problem (probably the first of many that you'll encounter unfortunately!), if its hot/cold, you probably have a sticking heater value inside the engine bay.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the Reply,

Lots of things for me to check out there, thanks. With regards to the fan it's not blowing hot OR cold, just doing nothing, so I guess it's electrical. Guess I'll pop her into the local garage for the once over. It's the shaking steering that's my major concern at the moment. I would ideally like to get her to "Exactly TVR" so that I can find out the real story of what I have just bought!!!

Cheers,
Mark,

morbius,

When hot does the engine turn fine and just not catch, or does it struggle to turn over? I had the latter, and it got worse until it wouldn't turn over cold either. It already had a new battery & starter so I changed the starter motor (and related cables) and it was fine hot and cold.

The starter gets blinkin' hot just under the manifolds and I imagine that in a tired one either increases in resistance or expansion do for it.

Morbius,

If you call Adrian at Exactly TVR and give him some details about the car the chances are that he's worked on it in the past and might know at least some of it's provenance......

Good luck,

Kris..

Since you are going to use this as your everyday car. I would strongly suggest that you give it to Adrian for a once-over.

I personally in your situation would deliver the car to him (come back by train if required) hire a cheap run-around for a week, and go and collect the car a week later. During that time Adrian will go through the car and fix all major/minor issues. Trust me it will be like getting a new car back. He isn't expensive and will slot this kind of work in around other jobs. He doesn't like to be rushed!

In the long run, I'm sure it will work out a lot cheaper (as you won't have the hassle/cost of finding local repairers for each bug as it comes up)

I fully agree with David. Adrian will sort out the issues, and you will have a good, reliable car for everyday use.

Thanks for the advice.

I've booked it in with Adrian at Exactly TVR tomorrow, had a good chat with him on the phone, he certainly seems to know his stuff.

He's going to have the car for a week or so and sort it out for me. I just pray that I can get the car started to drive it there tomorrow.

Thanks again,
Mark
