Reflective Heat Shield?
Discussion
I've seen a few pictures on here of various engine bays some of which use some sort of heat shield material and others that don't. My '79 3000S had the sides of the engine bay and transmission tunnel covered with some sort of foil backed material so I'm looking to replace this with something similar.

What are your thoughts on using heat shield material and what's the best stuff to use, if any?
Thanks,
GB

Hi Graham i had the same discussion yesterday with Phil regards the Taimar as i want to do the same and we have agreed that we will use the later material that they used on the later cars and have it edged by there trimmer and then glued and riveted in place covering as many areas including the tunnel as will eliminate or reduce some of the heat going into the car.

Tub not quite finished yet Frank but getting close - hence planning for things that need to be done before it goes back on the chassis.
I can remember that the footwells and the transmission tunnel got too hot for comfort on hot days when it was last running so something better than original might be in order - so any pointers for spec or supplier would be great.
You're gonna have to stop posting 3D photo's Andrew - my laptop only does 2D.

Either that or get a decent camera i agree the heat can be high so as much improvement as possible is needed and will not detract from the restoration but enhance the using experience at this stage is the time to address this fully as a pain later the original material i dont think is as good.I can remember that the footwells and the transmission tunnel got too hot for comfort on hot days when it was last running so something better than original might be in order - so any pointers for spec or supplier would be great.

That Zircoflex sounds good Frank - anyone used it/reviewed it?
I'd been looking at Thermal Velocity stuff as well as Car Builder Solutions so there seems to be a few choices around and a fair old price spread! I was hoping that someone would be able to say "I've used this and it's the d's b's".
Anyone?

I use this matting on all my race cars and never had a problem. Plenty of suppliers on the Bay various lengths and thicknesses but I buy mine by the meter and it comes a meter wide

Bernard,
Sorry to disagree, but saw somewhere, that the silver had a better 'albedo' (heat-radiation return) than the gold, and those were also only foils, not matting
(btw; how was your 'stew' ?)
grtz
Frank
Can the foil go between mat and body? Would that help total albedoSorry to disagree, but saw somewhere, that the silver had a better 'albedo' (heat-radiation return) than the gold, and those were also only foils, not matting

The "stew" is an antipasto, and we'll have it this afternoon, alfresco. Will let you know.
Best,
B.
Apart from antipasti, hands and fingers.........
agree, a foil on a more solid base would work better on the areas of the outer footwell (next to the exhuasts) on the 'original' location I think a flex matting would work better, due to the curvations
(which seamlessly brings us back to the date...................)

Back to subject whatever you use i would suggest as much insulation as you can on the inside of the cockpit floor and tunnel and on top of the tunnel as well and up behind the peddle box etc before the carpets go in.
Mine is done that way and i noticed that as my yellow one had not been done i was amazed at the amount of heat in the car even with the hood down no wonder they had by passed the heater box as it gets rather hot great for the winter but as we use the car in our very hot summers ???? well worth at least being able to control the amount of heat coming in ie the heater box working right and the Adrian Venn heater upgrade.
I will be doing that on the Taimar as well
