I have just become the victim of the fibre cam gear, the engine has only done 24000 mls since a complete engine rebuild in the UK where the rebuilder refitted a new fibre gear,I am replacing it with an alloy gear.
As my car has a low radiator & no engine driven fan,I would like to do away with the old engine fan pulley [bearing beginning to rumble]as it is not needed. Can someone advise me, is this possible & if so the replacement fan belt number that only drives off the crank pulley to the alt & water pump?

Hi Steve,
1250mm (as a turbo) once you have removed the bearing and welded a plate in place you will need to add a system (again as the turbo) to stop the belt from jumping off (perhaps the turbo version is over-kill), but something that is set up 1mm away from the back of the belt near the middle of it's longest run for the belt to touch against, not even to run against.

Thanks Adrian for your info,if I keep it standard, can you explain how to remove the bearing from the cam cover & what is it's replacement from, I can then probably source one from here.

The bearing is pressed out from the rear. There is a small core plug behind the bearing which you can just push out with the bearing. There is also a retaining pin fitted in the front of the cover. The bearing is a water pump bearing and is pretty hard to get hold of. After numerous attempts to stop the bearing rumble on mine including fitting a brand new one I have decided to get rid of the centre pulley.

1250 belt, sensibly tensioned but not over tight, not jumped off yet or have I just been lucky?

Mike,
You have a 5 speed conversion and a 3.31 diff (I presume, unless it has been changed to the matching 3.54 AND then I will stand corrected, and IF NOT.. then put it on your jobs to do list!), everything is running in a more casual fashion, it is just not going to happen. Steve is running a 4 speed and 3.45

In your second picture there are 2 bolts in line with the belt...a piece of sheet S/S angle 1/2" x 3/4"x 3" drilled/spaced/ mounted to longer bolts, then the last 1/2" of the longer side parted off 2" rolled back and set a cigarette packet gap away will do the job.

My 3000S is driven with enthusiasm at many circuits.
I have the turbo set up, 1250 fan belt, running free
I have 4.09 lsd, so with the T5 gearbox & 16" wheels,
20mph/1000rpm in 5th.
The thing revs for fun, I have to keep an eye on tacho, snatching 4th mid corner
to try keep it under 7k.
John Wade engine has so far stayed together well !

It has never chucked a belt
Cheers Ian

Hi Ian,
YOU dear sir, would have set the belt up with an engineers finely tuned 'touch....
THAT, or whacked it as tight as it will go, within a hairs breadth of running the bearings, to make sure it won't come off.
LOL

Adrian thanks for the advice but has anyone got a picture of Adrian's conversion, it would certainly help.
