Essex carb recommendation
Discussion
I have a 3.2 Taimar which has an old rolling road report saying it has 180hp! I'm not sure what work has been carried out on the engine previously but the carb is in need of a rebuild as it's leaking fuel and looking tired, I'm thinking of fitting a new carb are there any recommendations for a replacement?
What sort of carb does it have at present? I would look into rebuilding it, swapping carbs can lead to hassle especially on a non standard engine. Fuel leaks usually respond well to a rebuild kit which is a simple DIY job.
There are specialists who can recondition carbs back to as new condition for far less than buying a new one, if in fact a new carb is still available.
A 4 barrel Holley type carb will set you back well over £1K when tuning and anciliaries are added in. If money is no object then why not swap to fuel injection with the bonus of properly controlled ignition as well?

Interesting I have a brand new Holly sat on a 3.9 V8 rebuilt ready to fit…
But I like the old Essex
I think the carb fitted is a 38 DGAS but he linkage needs a coat of looking at ( bits missing on the original set up)
I'm sure I saw something on a 40 webber in the past but can't find the info now. Looks like a rebuild may be the best option.
I didn't realise you could fit fuel injection onto the Essex

Probably a bit late to say anything now, but I remembered from an older tuning book it said something like
"a 40DFI5 will add some bhp, but engine will be thirstier" and that the bigger carb fits on the same manifold without mods.
Do they still exist ? I'd be tempted to consider fuel injection too, and I would get rid of the autochoke on the DGAS, I've had loads of trouble with them in the past....
If buying a new carb, the 38DGMS is/was the manual choke version....
(yes - it is as simple as 38DGAS has 38mm venturi and 40 DFI5 has 40mm)

We had a 40DFAV on the Taimar to start with, but after the first run of the engine, which used a gallon in about 20 minutes sitting at idle we decided to take it off,
, we've now got a brand new 38DGMS which works perfect.
Is the DFI15 the rare one that they fitted to some rally car, or was it a Capri racer or something?

I had a 40DFI on a Taimar, on a modded engine it would return around 18-20mpg on the road. The big problem with Essex engines is the tight exhaust manifold arrangement, there is no pointing in going for a big bhp carb if you can't get the gasses away. My car rose 15bhp when I fitted a GAjon style exhaust system.
Unless you are after >160 bhp, then I would stick with the standard 38DGAS, if you want more then you need to think about the exhaust arrangement as well as fuel delivery.

Again, just for the info, I think tuners (Burton ?) say that you can get up to 180bhp from a modded 2.8 Cologne with a 38DGAS, so carb must be good for similar output on Essex too.
And remember the Cologne has the dreaded siamese exhaust port setup (and I'm pretty sure the 180bhp setup does not have the 3 exhaust port heads),
So perhaps even more than 160 bhp ??

North of 200bhp is possible on an Essex if you bore the dgas out.

The page you're linking to would indicate, that you'd have to bore a little more, as in six cylinders. (3.4l page) North of 200bhp is possible on an Essex if you bore the dgas out.

Bernard,
Just trying to show the 38dgas carb will support 180bhp.
DavidY the engine i'm thinking of is a Ric Wood 3.4 in a Scimitar so no Tvr manifolds there!!!!!!!!!
The Ric Wood 3.4 is a completely different animal from the 3.4 in that link.Just trying to show the 38dgas carb will support 180bhp.

And is way way north of 200hp.
