So I took the old girl for a run out this morning for the first time, absolutely loved!! However I came back stinking fuel, I understand this is normal, are there any tips or tricks to stop/reduce the smell?

think the old girl in question here is a Taimar ?

Check fuel lines (out + return), check metering surround for leaks, check filler neck and hose for leaks. If the old vapour return cannister is still fitted, bin it and blank. If all that seems OK, check tank for leaks (new: Adrian or DG)

Taimars are noted for fuel vapours and exhaust fumes entering the cabin from the hatch, rear light clusters.
Adrian has perfected lots and lots of methods of resolving the issue and they have been discussed ad infinitum on this forum over the years..

hopefully Adrian will be along to pass on the benefit of his experience.

You may well have a leak in the bottom of the Tank if its still the OE tank which was fitted resting on matting which held moisture it rusts at those points and develops small holes which even a small leak will create a lot of smell obviously hoses etc and sender seal can also create fumes so lots of options but the tank out if it looks OE would be my first check then work forward all those things need checking anyway on a car that has been sitting as long as yours
PS Don't smoke while driving wink

Wheb you say you smell like a petrol pump do you literally mean neat petrol or exhaust fumes?
Must admit when I drive my taimar, I always end up smelling of the exhaust fumes - doesn't bother me too much tho, they top up my insanity! Haha

If neat petrol then time to check all fuel parts. Still running hard fuel line from tank to engine? If so then as comments above - tank, rubber pipe connectors and carb area.

Thanks for all the replys, I believe the tank was changed, just before I got her to another used one. Oh and it's a 3000m. I used to have a mini which was a hill climb car with a webber in the bulkhead and the smell was similar although by all accounts a lot stronger in the tvr. When I got her she had an exhaust gasket leak so that was the original smell, I replaced that and now according to my better half when I got in I smelt of petrol. I didn't notice really ( concentrating too much, first run in the wet!) I'll check all the lines later

In a 3000M, the process of checking/eventually renewing all the above will be fun, fun, fun ! You might want to find a 10 year old, stick him in the back of the car, and check now and again if he's still alive.......

Hopefully the tank I put in is alright but all the hoses are well past there sell by date so get some new and. Replace all not worth doing anything else. Should think there all original. Richard

My 3000m smelt of petrol quite badly, even though i had replaced the clamps and used sealant.
I then got around to replacing the actual rubber hoses in the back to the copper pipe that runs front to back, and since then I have only the pleasant 1970s aromas of damp carpet and vinyl to enjoy. replacing the hoses made a huge difference.
When i came to throwing the old hoses they crumbled as i bent them into the bin… so they were decades past their time.

I wouldn't fk with fate too much, where carbon monoxide poisoning is concerned. You ought to put that at the top of the car's priority list.

Best,
