You need :

A switch
A Relay and relay holder
Two fuses/holders
Some small gauge wire (coloured and black) (8A or whatever, it's going to have barely any current)
Some large gauge wire (coloured and black) (We've got 39A thinwall cable for ours)

So, the switch needs a fused power (ign based) to one side, and the other side will go to pin 86 on the relay.
Next, a fuse feed to pin 30 on the relay, using the large gauge wire, this can be a permanent live.
From pin 87 on the relay, you take the large gauge wire to one side of the heated screen.
And pin 85 on the relay just needs to be earthed.
The other side of the heated screen needs another large gauge wire to earth, the same rating wire as the live side.

Hope that helps.

many thanks for the super fast reply.
I just have another question.
Do i need a special switch that has a timer like on modern cars to switch off automatically after a few minutes. Or fit one with a warning light?

The standard TVR fitment was just a normal switch with a warning light.

I'm sure there's a way to make the switch light up when it's on, as it's the same switch as in a mini, and that's what happens in that, but TVR put a light on the dash for it (on the Taimar anyway, 1600M will probably have different switches).

You can do fancy stuff with timers etc, but I don't know about them, just another thing to go wrong, biggrin

And the warning light can just be wired into the switched side of the switch.

i will do like you say with a warning light in the dash. The same as i have already for the ignition, the indicaters and the hazard warning. Plus i can see if the original heated rear window works and also put relay
thanks again Alan

The two most common reasons why heated windscreens stop working:

1. Water ingress; stop the water getting to it and it'll generally last longer, and

2. Burn out. They should cut out after several minutes, so the timer IMHO is essential.

Having looked, making it timed actually looks much easier than I thought it would have been. Just needs a momentary switch rather than a standard rocker.

Can get a timer relay to replace the standard relay.

If using a timer relay you'll need a "momentary" switch, one that's spring loaded to "off" as soon as you release it.
