Well, I finally got my Car's history back from the DVLA, along with a very nice letter from the guy who dug it out for me.

The car has had 13 previous owners from new! Although the first 5 years history is missing) OMG

She initially had quite a posh life. Bought by a dog breeder near Yarm in Yorkshire, she migrated south to London ( 5 year gap here where there may have been more owners). She ended up in Friern Barnet, Mill Hill, Hampstead Heath, then a sojourn to Sollihull, back to Battersea, and then off to Cambridge (maybe with a student from London, total ownership 4 months!!) then off to North Shields for 8 years. From North Shields to Durham where, I think, she had a minor accident and was taken off the road in 1986. After that she passed through 2 other people eventually ending up a stones throw from where she was made, in Bispham, Blackpool, where she was dismantled for restoration and eventually sold to me as a project in 2010.

Anyone else's car had a convoluted history?

I think the log book on my 1974 3000M say 22 previous owner and I've owned it since 1994. Will have to check now as I think it must be about 20 years to the day now!

Hi Matt

I recently had my ownership history back from DVLA and I'm only the third registered owner. The original owner had the car for 21 years. I think he sold it as a non runner (An 89 tax disc was still in the windscreen of my car when I bought it so it fits). The next owner kept the car for a further 19 years but I don't think it ever went back on the road. Thankfully he took the body off and painted the chassis with red oxide and stored it. It then went through a dealer to the guy I bought it off who never registered it with DVLA. I'm pretty sure my car has covered the 55,000 miles it has on the clock because i have a few service documents from the late 70s with the car having covered around 35k. I guess it's possible he did 135k in 9 years but pretty unlikey! It's part of the fun trying to work out the history.

I was surprised at how many owners had kept the car for a year or less and then moved it on. On guy had it for about 6 weeks before deciding to sell! It was form December to January, so maybe he preferred a car with better weather protection!

I plan to write to them all on the off chance that any of them are still at their original address, you never know.

I'm the 9th owner of my 1973 3000M, first purchased in early '73 in kit form and registered in March the same year. The original owner was from Blackpool, and the following 7 owners were all from Lancashire & Cumbria, so I was the first person to take the car away to sunnier climates… Staffordshire! Mine sat abandoned in the Lake District for nearly 20 years (tax disc expired March 1993 when I bought it in 2010).

I phoned the original owner and builder of the car a few months ago to give him and update - he couldn't believe it when I called, as the last he saw of the car was when he sold it later in 1973. Two of the other previous owners still have companies in Cumbria and I'm tempted to call them both too, just to let them know the old girl is still in existence.
