I thought these were seriously difficult to convert into a race engine...the local MOT station has one hung on the wall, I know no more than he say's that everyone say's, oh, a racing engine and he say's that it is nothing like one!

I should ask!

You are absolutely correct Adrian...besides which, the Granturas used the FWE engine of 1216cc, and I believe at least one had the FWB with a supercharger attached.....! Some fire pumps did use the FWB block, but many are very different to the engines used in 50's and 60's sports racers. All to the best of my knowledge of course...😉

Yes, there is a lot of work to convert one properly. I seem to remember one of the biggest stumbling blocks is that the fire pump has a cast iron crank. From a quick scan through my copy of Dennis Ortenburger's "Lotus Elite - Racing car from the road" I can see that

FWP = FeatherWeight Pump = 1020cc
FWA = FeatherWeight Series A = 1098cc, this was the first automotive engine for use in sub 1100cc racing class
FWE = FeatherWeight Elite = 1216cc, specifically for the Type 14 Lotus Elite (aka the world's prettiest ever car)
FWB = FeatherWeight Series B = 1460cc, for the 11/2 litre racing class

Oliver.

I would expect every internal part of this thing to end up in the scrap/recycle bin, when building a nice motor. If the crankshaft were to not require replacing, great, otherwise, no surprise.
