I`ve had a Taimar for some 5 years now and it was off the road when I bought it, and has been since.
I got a log book in my name after I bought the car, but have never sorned it, it came in bits and unfortunately is still in bits, and may not get back on the road for another 5 years at this rate.

my question is, if I contact dvla, are they going to demand back dated road tax? according to their website the car has not been taxed since 1991! ok I can account for the date on the log book of my period of ownership onwards, but am a bit concerned with the new tax set up as to whether when I did pipe up and either sorn or tax the vehicle they are going to chase me for unpaid back tax, in which case I just break the car for spares and say it was scrapped?

advice appreciated before deciding to phone dvla and make enquiries.

I beleive if the car was last taxed before 31 January 1998 it does not need to be sorn.

once its back in the system it will need to be sorn if you take it off the road again.

It pre-dates SORN so you don't have to do anything.
Let sleeping dogs lie and when it is finished just MOT in usual way. As long as you have a log book in your name it is on the DVLA records and if they had a problem would contact you.

Just for further confirmation, I bought a load of "bits" three years ago that had been off the road since 1991 and I contacted the DVLA after getting the V5 back from them as the new owner. They said that 1991 pre dates SORN so it does not need to be SORNed even after a new owner; so do not worry!
