Hi,

2 1/2 years after buying it, my 1972 1600M is taxed and road legal for the first time in over 25 years!

When I found it, the previous owner had 'updated' it with later version dash, seats and a 1600 Pinto.
After being resprayed it had been put into a garage without being fully reassembled. It took 3 hours to get it out of that garage, I eventually extracted it on 3 wheels and a trolley jack after giving up on trying to free off one of the rear brakes. It must have had some electrical problems, the dash wiring was pretty well melted.

It now has a Crossflow on 45's with Rocket Box and is bound for the Hills

Don't need one of these any more, and it's free.

It had been resprayed, but was microblistered, felt like sandpaper

'Updates' included a glass sunroof

1600 Pinto, probably seemed like a good idea at the time

It's now the fastest white, Ford Frost White as seen on Transits

I really wanted a '72 car with the early lights & vents

The dash is back to early M / Vixen style

1690cc, twin 45's, Omex ECU, Rocket box with Tran-X gearset, Gripper diff,

It had its first outing at Harewood a couple of weeks ago and went pretty well, so hopefully the 560 mile round trip to Lydden next week will be worth it.

Looking great Steve, I may have to get you to do a rebuild report for Sprint. Looks very nice for a hillclimb car, good to see one that is road legal. Wasn't the original Pinto a 2 litre, not a 1600?

Oliver.

Hi Oliver,

I could have sort of understood a 2 litre pinto, reasonable power and tuning potential, but still a heavy lump. But this was a 1600, just as heavy but without the power and potential. Also, with due respect to whoever did the transplant, it did not impress me with how it was done. The engine was partially supported by a piece of rubber on the chassis!

I am not one for slavish originality, my first TVR was a 1972 2500M which I converted to a V8M with a Rover engine, but this car was crying out for replacement of the Crossflow. And I had a short engine in my garage wink.

Yes, I well remember your Rover powered M, a lovely car and still going strong. I don't think I realised that the Pinto ever came as a 1600.

Oliver, Ford even put 1300cc Pinto engines in some German cars. Heavy donk for a 1.3!
