I'm set on buying a classic car this year. Models of interest include TVR 2500Ms/3000Ms/Taimars and Marcos 3000 GTs. For some reason TVRs seem about half the price of a comparable Marcos - anybody know why? I mean, they're both got GRP bodies on steel tube chassis, built on low volume production lines with Ford 3 litre V6s.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

Supply vs demand. I had a similar shortlist when I was looking (for me it was Vixen vs Marcos) and I've been watching for sale ads for a few months. Significantly more M's and Taimars for sale than Marcos.

Given your choices I would go for a nice carefully chosen Taimar, although I ultimately chose the Vixen.

Asking prices for the Marcos have jumped a lot in the last two years. I came close to buying a 1970 V6 with a new MOT for £9k. They seem to be at least double that now. Strangely, cars that don't sell sometimes get re advertised with a higher price!

I'm not sure that the Marcos is any rarer than the TVR Vixen, Tuscan V6 or 2500, with the exception of the Marcos 2500. There is one currently for sale for £26,500. I could have sworn it was £25,000 a few weeks ago. It was for sale last year for £16,500, although it has been re sprayed since.

The M series are generally a little younger than the Marcos and there do seem to be more around.

Good luck with your search!

Chris

Thanks guys. Rarity is one thing but is the Marcos really better than the TVR?
I know about the Marcos 2.5 litre. Whilst it IS a lovely car, the owner will struggle to get over 20K for it. I've been watching classic car prices and over the last 12 months, asking prices for the more affordable classics seem to have gone up over 50%. I wonder if that means prices will be heading down again after peaking.
