I believe that the manifolds are the most common upgrade due to the nature of the way they are routed through the chassis at the front - the upright tubes by where the downpipes are usually get in the way - I've seen options that route the pipes both inside and outside of the main centre structure - this I think improves the breathing of the whole system.
Incidentally my car has much bigger bore exit pipes than I have ever seen on an 'M' but still has the standard set of rear silencers.
I also remember someone saying that stainless steel exhaust systems have a smaller bore pipe than the mild equivalent so maybe that doesn't help matters either!!

I have a stainless system on mine, and I noticed last night that the manifold pipes seem larger than the tailpipes.
The system consists of the manifolds, which go into a large centre box, and then two tailpipes, each fitted with a smaller muffler/resonator (the tail pipes are about 1.75" dia.). The system is very quiet, so I was thinking about replacing the two tailpipes/small mufflers with 2.25" pipe.
This probably won't achieve much, apart from making me feel happy....

The standard manifolds are very restrictive, I had a custom system made by Tony Law in Leeds bought through Rik Wood (see Oily pages). I think that there are about 4 or 5 of these systems around.
The system basically consisted of seperate down pipes for each exhaust outlet to a common collector. These down pipes were tuned lengths and some of them went outside the chassis rails and back underneath, a real bunch of bananas affair. The system then went back in a similar manner to the standard system, ie through a central box then two back boxes. The bore of the pipes was at least 2.5in (similar size to the Griff500 we had at the time).
I believe that these liberated between 10 and 15 bhp improvement, after fitting I had a Taimar that would out accelerate my 235bhp Impreza Turbo between 30mph and 90mph!! (Given there respective weights of the cars, it suggests that the Taimar was producing around 200bhp).
I reckon that it was a big performance upgrade, but I did have a trick engine to start with, so I don't know about the effects on standard engines.
I also had a custom K&N filter made by K&N which would breathe to 235bhp and fit under the bonnet!!, standard K&Ns that fit are usually restricted to around 160-165bhp, so I think that the breathing on my engine was well sorted.

PS Tony Law only works in mild steel, the entire system cost around £900. The first one done is still on the owner's car after 8 years and only has need the boxes repacking.

Revolution RFX 15", 15x7 front (with long bolts + 19mm spacer from Adrian Venn and 15x9 !!! on the rear
Tyres Bridgestone SO2 PP 205/55 front, 225/50 rear. The rears only just cleared the arches.
This lowered the ride height and changed the gearing slightly but since I was using the car for Sprints/Track Days this didn't really matter
With Adrians special recipe Springs + Ledas + setup + Cornerweight the car was "Phenomenal". It was difficult to unstick in the dry, and I'll never forget going through the Cramer Curves at Donnington at a genuine 100mph!!! (No lift!!!!!!)
The main reason for going to 15's was to
a) clear the brakes (my car had Brembo Cross-drilled and vented discs from a Nissan Touring Car + Ford Motorsport AP Calipers) and
b) To be able to use some modern rubber.

Thanks David. In the future I'm looking to change from the standard 14" wheels for the same reasons. Has anyone put 17" wheels on an 'M'?
Adrian did my suspension as well, but AVO shocks.
I did a track day at donnington, but I'm pretty sure I was nowhere near 100Mph through the Craner curves.
Encouraging to know that an 'M' can perform this well with the right mods!

Dave Smith, Cambridge Area, Terminator will have his contact details, fitted 17 inch Compomotives to a 3000S, however you should be aware that a 3000S has a larger rear wheelarch than an M/Taimar. The extra Grip that Dave got from his wheel/tyre combination + his very modded 302V8!! meant that it put a lot of strain on the chassis and wishbones had to be strengthened, etc (cos cracks were appearing!!!)
Several people have fitted 16in's, but if its going to be your daily driver, watch the cost of rubber!!
