Thanks for the info!

I must admit I like the look of the one at Douglas Valley. Has any one seen it or have knowledge of it etc.
I am not afraid of doing some work (I am restoring a 350i at present)so any mechanical work etc is not a problem, but would like to buy a good one as a start!

Thanks again

Andy.

You need to talk to Adrian Venn at Exactly TVR, virtually every UK Turbo M series car has passed through his workshop at some point, and those that haven't he will know about!!

Either BUY WITH or be prepared to....uprate cooling/unleaded heads/brake materials front and rear/fuel tank/wheels/tyres/shocks and springs/carburettor and fuel system/boost retard system/exhaust flexi joint system, up grade rear wishbones,(those are the basic parts that I can think off the top of my head (you might want to think of rear disc brakes/rear ARB/larger front ARB/Larger and better front brakes/one piece front lower wishbones/better turbo/intercooling/full EMS with fuel injection/ water injection/ 5 speed conversion/LSD...ALONG with standard parts that are the basic TVR bits, rebuild the chassis/running gear/electrics/trim/paintwork. That said these are the most rewarding cars that you will drive, from a basic car expect 190bhp (and expect to spend 2000 on the first day making the car safe) OR buy one that is already done and get 224-310bhp the difference between 224 and 310 is properly sorted 9500 ukp AND you would never be able to buy the car off the person as they are so passionate about what they have, all the money in the world is not enough! Adrian@

Edited to say, that the black and red Turbo on the Turboregister site is now sold, as the car has now gone to live in france with it's new owner.

Possibly a bit OTT there Adrian for someone that just wants a Turbo and will probably do a nominal milage (3-4K per year).

Here's a friendly challenge based upon my (somewhat limited relative expereience). Please don't take offence, but there are folk happy with a fairly standard and more than adequate package. Most important thing IMHO is to buy the best car you can afford based upon overall condition.

Uprate cooling - Yes, have to agree standard radiator is not up to the job in Summer.

Unleaded heads - No, both expensive and of dubious value when there are stil cost effective alternatives with the mileage most cars will do.

Brake materials front and rear - Standard is fine for road use.

Fuel tank - standard is fine for road use.

Wheels - Nothing wrong at all with T-slots or Wolfies.

Tyres - just enure they are the correct speed rating.

Shocks - Absolutely nothing wrong with the standard Konis or spings.

Carburettor and fuel system/boost retard system/exhaust are all fine standard for normal and even aggresive road use if set up and functioning as intended.

Flexi joint system - will no doubt have been replaced, just ensure the exhaust is in good condition.

Up grade rear wishbones - nope, standard are fine.

Now...we can all have desire to upgrade, but I think to say that the list is the basic that requires upgrade is misleading and would put folk off owning a standardish car. wink

Your list of mods will generally improve on the standard car (some enormously), but the majority are no means essential.

Goes hunting for coat....

Hi Daftlad

Thanks for the info.
Interesting point you mentioned ref exhaust, by the pic on PH the Douglas Valley car has some exhaust problems, rear pipe missing and the other one bent. How different is the exhaust from the basic one and is it available etc!
All things I want to find out before I go Christmas shopping. (Well that's what I will tell the wife!)

The turbo system is completely different to a standard car. Manifolds turn forward under the sump and join to a Y piece via a set of expansion bellows or flexi joints that then connects to the turbo. From there a single pipe goes into a series of either one or two silencers (system dependant) and exit with two pipes quite close together.

A new system is readily available from the likes of JP exhausts http://www.jpexhausts.co.uk/Site/ExhaustsMan.htm and other specialists. The system on our car (featured in Sprint this month) has been on the car now for 17 years (all stainless). Bellows units have been cahnged but that' s simple task and the bellows are Ford items.

Andy:
I owned a Taimar Turbo (it's now in Germany) and 10 other TVRs. The one at Douglas Valley has been on and off Ebay and PH for about 12 months, the price keeps dropping. I saw the car when it was in Salisbury circa 2001 after the owner had died [of old age], and it had been off the road for 5-10 years. It had all the old tax discs etc and a wadge of paperwork. It was in generaly excellent condition bodily / interior, and had been dry stored. Had leather seats and electric windows. I could not determine the mechanical condition (other than the bits I could see, which looked fine) which is why I decided against it for the priice then being asked. I believe it was sold to someone outside the TVR "family" and has been languishing a bit since then. If it hasn't deteriorated a lot since, and if you are prepared to spend some money with the specilaists who have commented on this thread to recommission it, my feeling is if you can get it for under £5K go for it.

Adny,
I carry everything regarding the TVR turbo, standard or upgrade.

John,
I might concede on the Unleaded heads... but nothing else. I also stand by my last comments that for the very best of these cars then money has no importance. I would like to have every turbo running as the dream intends, I think my views reflect the dream not the nightmare of owning a TVR turbo.
Adrian@
Edited to say John, IMHO it took TVR until 2001 to produce a better car.....Oh yes, you own 2 of those!

Thank you all for your advice and hints etc.

I have decided after your words to go and have a look at the DV turbo and with your words in my mind, I am hopefully going to be able to decide if it's worth doing or not!
Like most of you I hate to see cars like this just sitting around and slowly deterring. If I think its worth it I will try and restore it back to original condition, but with safty and practicability in mind!

They need to be used if only for 3,000 to 4,000 miles a year!Mind you that's a bit optimistic with all my other TVR's. I only manage 2,500 in my Cerbera this year!

I will keep you informed of progress.

Good Luck in your search Andy - they're wonderful cars. To me the perfect blend of a classic and something that can still melt decent track day tyres...! Whatever you buy, please let me know and we'll get you on the register.

Good to hear you're back from your tours Mike - I got some pictures of your car at the Papplewick do - Am I OK to put the details I have for you up on the site? - I'll mark it for sale as well if that'll help...

Adrian, I actually have two red / black Turbo's down as being for sale, Chris Martin's 4338 (the ex. Chris Bland car) and 4243 from Martin Sharpe - which one of these are you referring to? Please let me know and I'll update the register. The new owner hasn't been in touch yet...

Hi

Turbo now paid for!
Now start's the refurbishment. (That's when I get it home)
Body is in good condition apart from a lump out of the bonnet. Some story that some thing fell on it in a garage!
That and getting it cleaned and going are my first jobs.
Will keep you informed.

Andy.
