Hi

I am about to refit my re-built brakes on the Vixen. After looking on the TR6 parts catalogue it appears the TR6 has a 'caliper centralising shim' as well as a hose bracket. The vixen did not have these parts fitted. Also, there were no anti- squeel shims.

Can someone tell me if these are needed on the TVR?

Secondly, I assume (with the fan being so far away from the Rad) that over-heating might be a problem, is that the case? I was already thinking of fitting an electric fan, can anyone tell me if there are any applications that can be made to fit from any other car(keeps the cost down as my local scrappy is a decent bloke and lets me have parts for peanuts!). Or, what is the usual after-market fan that is best to fit?

Engine is standard 1600.

Thanks in advance.
Paul.

The point being that you have a TVR rather than a TR6 when you are looking at a Vixen which runs Triumph Herald uprights, a modified TR6 caliper hand and MIGHT run metric OR imperial calipers where the hose drops directly into the caliper sealed with a copper washer. Without working out which caliper you have and FOR YOUR ANSWER is, if you have 3/16 pins in the caliper you can fit a anti-squeal/rattle kit (which holds the pads apart), you do not need to, as you can buy adhesives that will do the job on the 1/4 pins. As for the fans ..as for the fan IMHO buy a new radiator mounted kit.

My calipers are the split half metric, half imperial castings. Thanks for your advice.

I've seen a few replies along the same lines, including when I posed questions. I'm not sure you can take such a black and white approach when your looking at what are effectively 'donor' parts. Triumph designed, engineered and manufactured parts that were then purchased and used on TVR vehicles. It makes sense to refer to the OEM application when looking for information on the parts. I'm all too aware that the bods at TVR 'back in the day' decided to really mix it and match it in their application of the parts but it doesn't mean that Triumph didn't know their onions in the first place.

you need to look and select parts carefully when building vixens. there are modifications which can be made to the suspension which are not noticed to the untrained eye.

uprights can differ, stub axles can differ, wheel bearings can differ, top ball joints can differ, brake carrier brackets can differ and also I have seen 3 different calipers which all look the same but are different.

It also gets very complicated when you realise that you need the correct order of bits dependant on which configuration you have got. in cases like this it is always best to consult Adrian.

Neil.

Re read my last sentence...

My preferred source of reference is Dr John Uphams very useful parts guide.

Thanks Seabass, I also use John Upham's site and find it invaluable. I forgot to double check on this occasion, it might have stopped me asking an obviously stupid question.
