More help please,
Steering column bearing.

I believe the bronze bush (in the bracket welded to the chassis) and collar set column height and help earth continuity but should it be a 'fit' on the steering rod diameter or have clearance. Mine has about 2mm side play with the UJ's removed but the height bits fine.

thanks,
David

David, is the play in the shaft rather than the bush (as this is the norm) on the early column there is a ring that is above the bush and this is set against the face of the bush to stop the rise and fall oscillation caused by the 2 UJ's and so give the horn press a chance to work correctly, wear comes back to you as noise/feed back through the steering wheel.

The ring sits on the bush OK so vertical control is fine. The shaft itself has wear (or a manufactured depression) where it goes through the bush so there is 1mm to 2mm side play of shaft in bush. I guess this will disapear when I fit the UJ's or does it need a new shaft ??

Adrian, thanks for info. helpfull as always.

With better understanding of the logic, I will re-check all steering components. As you know I am already replacing most of the normal 'wear' parts.
