Hi any of you clever types know if I can swap my 3.31 diff in my 3000s for a Jag XJ6 3.31 diff will this be a straight swap from a mounting and connecting point of view. My diff is the only problem now after a lengthy complete car rebuild. Your knowledge would be greatly appreciated

In theory yes.

make sure you get the 4HU though in an early XJ6. there were 3 types of diff fitted to the XJ6 over the years.

The next question is are you looking to fit the powerlok LSD?

I am not sure about the M series cars but in early griffs when you fit the 4HU from a jag doner then it pays to have the axle re-built and the LSD ramp angles altered. in std form the LSD has a tendancy to come in hard and push the nose of the car out.

Doubtless some M owners will know better than me but Its worth checking out.

the other worry is that if you are buying from a scrap jag (heavy car) the diff you are installing may be just as clonky!

N.

Thanks for your input HeightSwitch, the diff at present is I think a standard diff there is no powerlok tab bolted on to the casing, although at 30 years old this could be anywhere. I had not anticipated fitting a LSD I take your point about the diff and weight of a Jaguar, is there any easy way to see how much backlash there is in a diff with the diff out and on the ground. The diff is very cheap so probably worth getting even if to rebuild as and advanced replacement for mine.

If its cheap and its a 4HU then just buy it.

Only real way to check backlash is to strip and dial guage it.

A 4HU is a pig of a diff to work on and I would only trust a limited few to re-build. A re-build costs around £400 but thats for an LSD. std are probably cheaper. If it is cheap enough then Its worth having one as a spare and it may be perfectly fine.

It goes without saying, remove the backplate, clean and flush it out with parafin and change the oil. make sure the breather is also clear.

Neil.

Neil can you recommend a re-builder just in cast the diff is £80.00 so not much of a loss if no good might be worth rebuilding as a matter of course if round the £400 mark
