I've been offered a TVR 2500 that runs, bodywork and chassis look ok though its been off the road for some time. The interior needs refurb and re cover etc. My question is are these models worth anything and have they a following. I love the looks but have no idea what they are like to drive. Any help appreciated before I part with any cash

I run a 1971 Vixen bodied 2500 – as opposed to the later 2500m (72 -79) but which ever version you own, unless you are understanding or forgiving to the inadequacies of cars which are 40 years old in their design and performance you may be disappointed. You will need time to work on it and need to be a practical person with tools and enthusiasm.

As for how they drive – well they are very noisy by modern standards and can be awful if much of the original sound insulation is missing or if the door seals are knackered. Also if it doesn’t have an overdrive fitted - buy some ear defenders. They are however light and pokey and go around corners well. It’s a great A & B road car and of course they look great and are pretty unique on road unless that is you head towards a TVR meet.

Obviously these cars have a following – and are worth money with prices that have risen a lot in recent years. There aren’t many around to easily say what they are worth – especially 2500s. I paid 2600 quid for my 2500 (2007) and it needed a body off restoration. I’d expect at least 10k if I sold it. It would probably be best to get the car inspected by a knowledgeable TVR person because if it needs work it can be costly as it is for any classic car. See if you can find someone local to take you out for a drive in one as it would be the best way to learn if the car is right for you. I’m in Bedfordshire if you are passing by.

Thankyou for that. Having had an xjs until very recently I understand the need for hands on skills! Sounds like I might be on to something and become a TVR owner.

I bought a basket case early tax exempt 2500M last year... restored it and re-trimmed the interior myself..

It has an overdrive... without this it would be a pain in the bottom! I also fitted some very bright headlight bulbs, a decent sound system along with a whole host of other "mod-cons" which you dont really notice... but they work unlike the 40 year old pieces that didnt!

I did spend a lot of time stripping the suspension and replacing every bush etc with decent polybushes... it means that the car now handles pretty well (for a 40 yearold car)... I can deffinately throw it about a bit and really enjoy driving... its not rocket ship fast, but the 2.5L engine has quite a bit of torque... plenty for 30-50 overtaking...

I am not far from you in Malvern if you wanted to come and have a look or needed help with anything...

This is mine..
