It appears that the inside of my Taimar fuel tank has been coated with a silver coloured sealer at some time in it's life which has now started to flake off and clog the fuel filter.
Does anyone have any advice to offer on the best way to clean off the coating and once done, is it wise to reseal the tank?

Below is how I have re-conditioned old fuel tanks. This is not to be taken as a recommendation. Use this method at your own peril. WARNING! DANGER! High risk! Insert any other disclaimer you can think of here! May be hazardous to your face!

1.) Rinse the tank with soap (or de-greaser) and water until it is clean.
2.) Let it dry in the sun. (Do NOT help it with heat! It WILL still give off explosive vapours)
3.) String a pile of nuts onto a wire. (Loop it and knot securely)
4.) Throw that charm bracelet inside the tank.
5.) Shake the tank like a maniac until your arms fall off.
6.) Get the wired up nuts back out.
7.) Blow the tank out with compressed air. (Wear a particle mask)
8.) If there's rust, use Ospho by SkyCo and repeat 2-7

-Dispose of all hazardous chemicals and residue in a safe, legal and socially acceptable fashion.-

I would re-coat in order to stabilise the remainder of the old coating following the coating manufacturer's preparation instructions.

Did I forget any disclaimers?

Alternate method:
1.) Drop the tank at a professional who will boil the tank in a caustic Alkali bath.
2.) Pick it up after re-coating and receive a warranty.

Apart from platelets of lead from when they have been made it's the only thing I have seen floating around inside a tank. Adrian@

Floating lead? Actually I know exactly what you mean - just shaken half a dozen out of my tank. Suffered fuel starvation problems, pump was whirring away and not pumping any fuel when I KNOW there's about 1/2 a tank (took the sender out and looked in). I was expecting there to be all sorts of crud in the bottom but it doesn't look that bad.

I'm wondering if one of the lead platelets could have been partially blocking the pick - up point.

My tank appears to have baffles in it so the "nut bracelet" idea would end in tears I fear.

Common....if the tank is sound externally, I always give the tank a few bangs to loosen any that are in there prior to flushing via the sender hole, I would normally expect to find 20-30 small pieces.

Funny! Made me laugh.
POR is a misnomer, it should have been called "st Over Rust, Eh" or SORE.

Many thanks for the advice.
In summary it appears that you advise having the tank stripped by a specialist (my tank also has baffles) and on no account re-seal.
Once again, thanks for the help.
