If you can get hold of the original factory manual great but the Haynes manual for 3 litre Capri is fine. Unless you are 100% sure about the cam timing gear replace it. The absolute must to replace regardless is the oil pump/distributor shaft. Dont rely on the timing marks, use a dial gauge and a cam timing wheel. Vernier timing wheels are not as expensive as they used to be and make valve timing a lot more simple than using offset dowels. Its a fairly straightforward engine to build but take your time. sTeVeR
If you want to improve the performance while you,re at it, change the cam at this stage. It is the most crucial component in the Essex. The weakness is that in standard form they dont "breath" very well. The perceived wisdom is a cam with 0.4 inch of lift transforms the breathing, and anythig else, heads, carbs etc can easily be added later, a cam can,t.
