What do we make of this then? Reports are coming out that Hamilton and Sutil went out to a club after the China race. It is alleged a fight broke out, and that Sutil smashed a bottle and cut Gerard Lopez's "right hand man" across the neck. Hamilton's bodyguards got him out of there, whilst Sutil jumped on the first plane out of China.

Again, this is all alleged and not confirmed in the slightest - but what do we think? An interesting story, no?

I don't believe he used a broken bottle to slash a guy for a second - if that were the case, you can be sure he would be gone from F1 in a second.

A bit of a scuffle, maybe

Well if it has gone to court (the third-hand information at the bottom) Sutil won't be able to keep it as a "private matter".

If it turns out he has attacked someone with a bottle his career would be over faster than Nelson Piquet's.

However much the two parties involved wish to keep this matter private, it is very unlikely that they will be able to. We will be hearing more on the matter, regardless of intent.

Personally, I hope that matters are resolved without further recourse to the courts, since this sort of thing does not good for the image of F1 (particularly in such a potentially important market as China) or the individuals involved.

I am pleased to hear that information is being presented in such a way as to accommodate the possibility of an accident, and very much hope that it remains this way.

If it turns out it wasn't an accident, then I disagree and so will his sponsors.

That might tie in with reports that the Hulk is due to partner Di Resta next year according to recent reports? Maybe the whole Sutil package has suddenly become far less appealing to them (and more importantly, Mercedes).

It was bound to get out and can only cause Force India and their sponsors embarrassment.

Good find by the way.

A scuffle, handbags and to an extent fisticuffs is one thing. You can usually keep that low key and private.

Start smashing people with bottles and it becomes a very different question. Almost all the professional police forces now treat bottles in the same manner as knives as the use shows a determined intent to injure and harm...not just handbags. You get involved in handbags and so long as one of you hasnt put the other in hospital, the law is usually just happy to throw you in the cells for a night or cause you grief and hassle to teach you a lesson. You make it a serious case of intent to harm and it becomes beak time. Blackpool police have certainly put time and effort into getting this message out after the number of bottle incidents started to rise.

There is an 8 page thread about this on Autosports forum...

It seems that it was some sort of accident as opposed to an assault..?

If it turns out it wasn't an accident, then I too would expect it to go to the courts. I'd also hoped that this was obvious, so I did not bother to write it.

However, I repeat: I hope that this will not be the case! I hope that matters are resolved without further recourse to the courts, since this sort of thing does no good for the image of F1 (particularly in such a potentially important market as China) or the individuals involved.

I hope this is untrue, or has very much been embellished.

From the times:
One witness who saw the incident said last night: “Lewis had no idea what was happening.
Adrian and Eric were arguing in German and the next thing it was happening.
Lewis did not even see it because it went off so quickly, but he thought it was better to get out of the way and he was quite upset when he was told what had happened.”

If it was an 'accident' then why are parties present/involved being hustled by bodyguards out of the VIP room and jumping in the first flight out of China.

If it was an accident you stay explain the situation and are backed up by witnesses and the injured party, that it was just an accident, you don't do a runner.

Edit'd for speeeeling failure.

Sounds a bit like
"Sorry mate, I was being a bit of a tt"
"Yeah, I kinda was as well, things got out of hand, it was stupid, we were both being tts"
"Pint?"
"Yeah, go on then, ya *light hearted punch on shoulder with a smile*"

Sutil had too much to drink and things got out of hand? Or perhaps he just turned round with a glass in his hand and clipped the fellow, or perhaps the fellow tried to take the glass from him and it broke. Could be anything..

Either way, unless and until Sutil runs around smacking everyone he meets, there is no problem..

You have quoted me. You have also highlighted the important words. However, I will repeat it for you in an effort to be clear:

…I am pleased to hear that information is being presented in such a way as to accommodate the possibility of an accident, and very much hope that it remains this way. … because I am concerned about all parties, including the public image of F1.

You will have noticed that since I was not there, I make no reference to specifics and all I know of the incident is what has been written in the press so far. Therefore I cannot possibly judge what happened or even attempt to explain it. All I can do is express relief at the way that it has so far been presented, because it accommodates the possibility of it being accidental and therefore the possibility that the implications for F1 and the parties involved will be less than if it was not an accident.

I have no idea whether it was actually an accident or not. I am just pleased that there seems to be a possibility that it was an accident.

How else can I say this? - I am not being evasive. I am telling you exactly what I think. I cannot offer any conjecture whatsoever.

No need to be so defensive. I am not arguing with you just pointing something out if what is reported is ture.

Another perspective - doesn't sound like an accident here:

ETA - though it does quote the Daily Wail, so make of it what you will.

My apologies. I thought you were demanding an explanation from me. However, having read your words again from a different perspective, I see now that you were raising a general point rather than asking me personally.

This is the trouble with words isn't it? I hope you can also see how it looked to me. beer

I also see the point you were making. It is interesting.
