OK, an odd question under the current circumstances...

However, there is a school of thought that says he has a VERY average team mate in Mark Webber, and whilst he has clearly pulled ahead of Webber this year, it was mightly close right up until the end of last season.

My question is, would Vettel be able to compete with Alonso, Hamilton or Button in the Red Bull. i personally don't think so.....

No, he's clearly rubbish, the worst driver in F1 who should give his seat up to Sato; in fact it's not him driving it's Adrian Newey doing it remotely from the pits.

He might struggle to beat Alonso in the same car, but Alonso has a bit more experience. But he'd trash Hamilton and Button (and I'm a Button fan!)

I happen to think Mark Webber is a pretty handy driver, equal to Button and Heidfeld. So since Vettel has beaten him for three seasons (including 2008 when Vettel was in STR and Webber in RBR), and well on his way to beating him for a fourth season, I think he's definitely "any good".

Is he "any good" in relation to Hamilton and Alonso? Who knows? Put the three in equal machinery, and you might as well roll a dice. Frankly, I don't care, because we now have the finest bunch of driving talent in F1 since the Prost/Senna/Mansell/Piquet era.

Hamilton is widely regarded as the fastest driver on the grid and Alonso the most complete, so I'm not sure where you opinion that Vettel would trash Hamilton comes from. Try googling it like I did. Plenty of people saying that Hamilton is the fastest, but could find none suggesting that Vettel is.

What I wonder is... how much Red Bull's engineering staff have been catering their designs to Vettel over Webber.

According to Webber, both he and Vettel have similar preferences for car characteristics, so if the car would suit both equally. The problem this season is the tyres, no the car. In previous seasons, it was just Webber being slightly slower than Vettel -- the latter seems to be able to pull fast laps instantly at will, while Webber seems to need time to build up his speed.

Based on performance then I have to say he is.

He is starting to look like a very complete driver.

Does anyone remember last year .. every race towards the end
he would bang in a fastest lap. Even when leading by a big margin
Brundel said it's a silly risk.

This year - he has stopped that .. and not been off the podium.

I thought the commentary said he has no fastest laps... In the race anyway! Obviously qualifying is different.

Yesterday he had pole, fastest race lap and the win, think that is/was his first 'hat-trick'.

In answer to the question posed by the OP, 'is he any good?'

NO! He couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo.......;)

I'm obviously completely wrong, but I could have sworn that Brundle said that Webber had set 4 fastest laps but had yet to lead a race. I must be starting to imagine things. Sorry LG.

Who cares about fastest lap - fastest AVERAGE lap is what counts and he got that by winning the race.

^^ This is true. getmecoat

I couldn't find that page so went through each race one at a time, not realising it reverted back to race result when I changed race. I'll just go and have a lie down.
Apologies for misleading you.
