Lewis Was A Star At Goodwood

Here is why!
My mates 11 year old son Owen was pulled out of the crowd by a McLaren PR person and taken (at the request of Lewis Hamilton) to meet Lewis for a chat.
Owen had got an autograph off Lewis earlier on in the day and said "I met your brother and dad yesterday, they are very nice".
Lewis was touched by the comment and made a special effort to see him later in the day.
Quite frankly Lewis get's a bad press because his does really care about the fans and at Goodwood he went up the hill early just to stand at the top of the hill to sign autographs for an extra 30 mins or so.
They guy is a star (of course he's not perfect) but he cares. Blooming Damon Hill and a few other big names made no effort to get out of their cars (at the top of the hill) to sign a few autographs etc. That's a poor show....
Here's the moment Lewis met Owen and the PR man taking him to meet Lewis.
Lewis said "one day Owen, there is no reason why you can't be driving this car in the future". He came away in amazement and will write a story at school so everyone can be motivated by the story.

He does occasionally get a bad press, icluding on this forum. My son has fairly similar story to yours, we are fortunate enough to be invited to the Mobil 1 Garden Party on the Saturday before the BGP each year(not happening this year though!) and it is pretty much an adult only event. The drivers fly in, we have seen Raikkonen, Alonso, Montoya but the best of all was Lewis. He always makes an effort to come and speak to the children (there are only a few in attendance) and has a good chat with them all. He always thanks them for their support, signs hats t-shirts and then patiently has his photo with these children who are absolutely star struck at meeting their hero. He completely changed my opinion of him (and those who all witnessed this). He was charming and seemed so sincere in meeting his fans. Last year he even remembered my son!
My son then had to stand up in assembly to tell his story, show off his photos, hats etc and talk about his 'mate' Lewis!!
Needless to say, but he has won a fan for life and personally I think he is a superb role model, much better than some other sporting counterparts.
We can't wait for this weekend !

But, not being blinded by hate, I wouldn't really have expected much different as I've heard many similar things. Lewis is a nice guy, as well as aggressive on the track. This is a rare combination as it's an almost bi-polar character trait.
For evidence of his personality (without ever having met him), just have a look at how many of his team-mates are still real life mates - Sutil, Nico, Kovy, JB... It takes a special person to be able to beat everyone AND remain friends with everyone.

I don't think anyone has ever questioned that away from racing LH is anything but a gent; whenever he's doing "stuff" on the BBC or whatever away from the track he seems to be really good company. Jens was a star a few years ago in Melbourne. After a horrible weekend for him he made a fantastic effort to sign Autographs and talk to fans. This was long after the race when most drivers had pissed off.Gassing Station | General Motorsport | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
