  • 1.6L V6 limited to 15,000 RPM
  • No boost limit for turbos, but a fuel limit of 100 kg/hr
  • A new version of KERS that harvests from both the drivetrain and the turbo's turbine and has a power limit of 120 kW or roughly 160 bhp
  • It has to self-start and can only run on electric power in the pits
  • 8-speed gearbox, fixed ratios with only one change during the season

Blimey, so engine off in the pits and completely silent?

Some very interesting new regs there. Electric only in pits, and turbo's with no boost limit...

What's with the gear ratios?

They may as well fit SatNav and if the driver pushes up, left, red button then orange button, he gets unlimited lives. rolleyes

To keep costs down, plus turbo engines tend to have a broader spread of torque so it won't be so critical about matching the rev's for a circuit

I'd think peak power won't be at 15K so there's some headroom

Limit top speed I guess. What with unlimited boost.

So, er, does this mean that all power boosting comes from increasing the turbocharger pressure?
"The MGUH may only recover energy from or give back energy to the car via its mechanical link to the exhaust turbine of a pressure charging system. This mechanical link must be of fixed speed ratio to the exhaust turbine and may be clutched."

hmmm i love technical regs!

"When intersected by a horizontal plane, all sprung parts of the car which are between 450mm forward and 325mm rearward of the front wheel centre line and less than 200mm above the reference plane may contain no more than one single section which must be symmetrical about the car centre line"

I quite like the stop/start as they come in and leave the pits - going to lead to some interesting tech as they work out how to go from 50mph electric to full on power when they leave the line. In/Out laps are going to be very very interesting.

Self start engines also gets rid of anti-stall and allows better chance of recovery after a spin I reckon.

Or ditch the lot and have a clutch pedal. Simples.. (in more ways than one)

If that worked they wouldn't have fitted anti-stall to the current cars.

does mean Red Bull will have to finally get their KERS fixed properly or they will be censored as soon as they pit! They have got 3 years yet though.....

Current cars don't have a clutch pedal.. smile It's all paddles and buttons (no pun intended!) in 2011

Yep ! But their main problem seems to be that Newey won't compromise Aero to package KERS efficiently so it doesn't get the cooling it needs (according to technical press). This would have to change I suspect !

5.18 It must be possible for the driver to start the engine at any time when seated normally at the
wheel and without any external assistance.

Whats the point in that? Is it for safety? Let's just hope they remember where they left their keys LOL.

Shame we are going to lose the noise in the pit lane, was one of the best sounds IMO.

Why the change to 8 gears too? 8 seems an awful lot! They change gear often enough as it is now!

I expect Newey will consider the new rules as and when they come into force. Right now it isn't "Newey doesn't like/won't let us have KERS" so much as "Newey believes a car thats more aerodynamically stable/clever and therefore faster through the apex on most corners is better than a car thats got a slight power advantage exiting 2 out of 15 corners"

And he'd be right, it seems.

VVT still not allowed. Anyone know what the reasoning behind that is? Well established technology and relevant to road cars.
