Monza memory's.

As it's the Italian GP this weekend I thought it would be good to see peoples memory's of past races.

Thanks, you just reminded me to start the GP thread.


Not a memory, but the 1967 race was supposed to be one of the best races ever. It had it all, an early pitstop to change a tyre, a fight back through the field for Clark to unlap himself and then take the lead only to run low on fuel and let Brabham and Surtees through for a photo finish that Surtees just won in the "Hondola". Clark finished 3rd.

1969 and 1971 were interesting races too. I've never seen any TV footage for 1971 (only film) but there is TV footage of the 1969 race (one of Murray's eralier GP commentaries too - and he keeps geting the cars mixed up).

Just to buck the trend of the more common favourites I remember the 2003 Schu v Montoya battle quite fondly. I just remember them being utterly neck and neck for most of the race, neither made a mistake just driving damn fast. They left the rest of the field behind.

Monza has often been the place where we've seen the pressure of the championship get to some leading drivers.
I'm thinking of Damon Hill, head in hands in 1996, Hakkinen crying in 1999 and Schumacher crying in 2000.

My Monza memory is of getting wet - the year we went (2004) was the first wet race day since 1976... Great fun though.

My over-riding Monza Memory was watching Joe Tandy go around the outside of Emilio de Villota at the Parabolica on the last lap of race 3 in 2005.

A proper balls to the wall effort. The Violator wasn't expecting it at all and Tandy got past him by a nose cone by the line.

If someone could find it on Youtube for me I would be very greatful.

The Tandy brothers are surely two of the most talented guys this country has produced in the last decade. Proper racers both.

Johnny Herbert's heroic 1994 qualifying effort must go down as one of Monza's best laps. I remember being so excited I called my dad at work.

Mine too (not even watched the vid, just checked what it was!)

I'm not a Ferrari fan (famous PH get-out clause!), but it was a thrilling race (even better with the rumours of Prost's tactics which I've only heard of recently thanks to the internet), and it was nice to see McLaren's dominance broken for one weekend given Ferrari's death...

Cheever and Warwick (who I was a massive fan of as an 11 year old back then) bringing their cars home 3rd and 4th was also a great result for Arrows at possibly the team's best... Really does feel like yesterday!
