Very surprised by this.
I know that privately Jarno doesn't really have a good thing to say about being at Lotus - Mr Grumpy.
And he's not added anything to the team either !
Team Lotus has today announced that it has extended Jarno Trulli’s contract to take the Italian into his third season with the Anglo / Malaysian squad. Jarno was first confirmed alongside Heikki Kovalainen in late 2009 and has played an integral role in the development of the team from its entry into the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship to its current position in 2011, closing the gap to the established teams ahead and laying the foundations for a long-term challenge for the ultimate Formula One honours.
Tony Fernandes, Team Lotus Team Principal, gave his thoughts on Jarno’s extended relationship with the team: “We are all delighted that we have been able to reach an agreement to keep Jarno on board for at least one more year with our team. He has shown in qualifying in Monza just how much pace he has and how he can wring every last drop of performance out of his car and since day one with us he has brought a level of professionalism, insight and raw speed to our team that has helped accelerate our development on and off track. Today’s announcement will give us the benefit of his experience and knowledge into 2012, another very important year in the growth of our team.”
Jarno added his comments, saying: “I am very pleased that we have been able to confirm today that my contract with Team Lotus has been extended into 2012. The challenge I first accepted when I joined the team is becoming more exciting every day, and I am very proud that I can keep helping the team take steps forward for at least another year. I would like to thank Tony, Kamarudin and Nasa for the chance to keep working with them, Riad, Mike and the whole team and I am looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead.”
Personally i would have kept Heikki as the team leader (Fast, experienced, great for morale) and taken a pay driver for the second role. I can understand ONE experienced driver for development etc, but realistically at the moment (and for the next two years) the money a rookie would bring in (And money saved from Trullis wages) would be better than any extra skill/experience trulli offers, especially as they arn't even near the points at the moment.
Build the team around Heikki, he is under-rated and good enough for a team leader for anyone outside of the top 4 imo. Trulli is grumpy and i feel does as much harm as good.

Quite agree. Heiki is really liked at the factory. I don't think Trulli even bothers going there anymore.
Perhaps they've signed him but will bring in Ricardo Teixeira (who's brought in some massive sponsorship money) or Davide Valsecchi during the 2012 season
I like Trulli - but he's just been going through the motions to pick up a pay check every week.
He's got no passion anymore but can't give up the F1 paddock yet or chasing tail

Shame. I've a lot of respect for Jarno, but I think he should move over for some fresh blood. He's clearly only in it for the money these days, which isn't a bad thing but he doesn't have the team's interest at heart, where Heikki seems utterly devoted to them and clearly very happy to be there.
Heikki's more than experienced and skilled enough to do all the development feedback type gubbins. Jarno just gives me the impression of a dour hasbeen who's not happy where he is and has little positive to say, nor much in the way of success at the wheel of late.

Grosjean would have been perfect for Lotus and for Renault. Reading it all again it almost sounds like a golden handshake. I'll try and get the inside scope in the next week or so.

Everyone saying that they should kick Trulli out in favour of a pay driver. As if the thing that Lotus are lacking is money.They need someone with experience who can help them develop the car, Fernandes has more than enough money to put into the team without having to resort to giving a pay driver a shot.

Disagree. Trulli was a good choice 2 years ago. But he's brought nothing to the team. Trulli was the qualifying - 1 lap specialist. That was a long time ago.

Remember you are not just wanting to get results you are wanting feedback on what does what with whatever from the car and the ride. This will never be forthcoming from a newcomer.Trulli needs to take retirement and make wine
The first seasons for Lotus will be based on getting these kind of results. Remember Trulli has been the best of the new teams.

But whats the Team Lotus yearly budget? Approx 50-60 million? Ten mill is a big chunk of that.A paid driver will bring in what £10 million?

All Trulli has done is force the team to spend half a season developing new power steering that seems to have made no difference to Heikki who is still thier main pacesetter. Tony may be worth alot but hes a sensible buisiness man who likes his books to balance, i am sure if they stopped paying trulli and got in a pay driver the budget for the year would increase. Besides what value does Trulli offer anyway? When it matters he is always outperformed by Heikki, his results have been largely irrelevent to their championship position.
