How fast is an F1 car?

Some of you may have seen this before but I think it's worth posting for those that haven't. Simple video to show the difference between an F1 car and GT cars through Eau Rouge. Amazing doesn't cover it really.....

Not to nit-pick, but a lot of the cars weren't GT.

It would be better if it was a side-by-side comparison of a GT1 race car vs F1.

The cars on the left were on a track day, so they would be slower as most are road cars, not GTs.

exactly, not a single GT car shown either...

Yes, F1 will be faster, but the difference between a front running GT-1 car would be not that big.

better comparison would be with an LMP-1 car

F1 car Vs Ford Focus but still interesting comparison for people who claim F1 Drivers aren't sports men, all they do is drive a car for 2 hours and that's not hard is it?

Hah! The difference between a front-running GT1 car and a Formula One would be MASSIVE. Even the difference between F1 and LMP1 is large.

Not as large as a lot of people think. More downforce on an LMP, takes a more manly man to wrestle it up eau rouge.

Gap is about 13 seconds around Spa, 10 around Monza. So about the same gap as between Red Bull and HRT

yup, it's all relative, however, in the context, LMP1 cars are not 'slow'

Deffinatly far from slow! Especially impressive considering they have to run absolutely balls out for 24 hours and cover more distance than an entire F1 season using less fuel and tyres

Ten seconds is a massive gap. But, lol points for the HRT/Red Bull comparison. GPD tweeted at the weekend 'Looks like the retired HRT has caught fire. Probably trying to put itself out of its misery.' Made me laugh.

Aaaanyway...

I'm not saying LMPs are rubbish, or slow or whatever. But they're nowhere near Formula One in terms of outright pace.

Also, they never used to be able to run balls out for 24hrs. Le Mans becoming a sprint race is a (sad) fairly recent development.

better comparison would be with LMP1 but a GT1 wouldn't see which way a F1 car went.

GT cars can provide solid, close and exciting race for hours at a time at least though, which F1 very rarely does. Seeing as the F1 show isn't even going to be on free to view next year, they can keep it, I won't bother anymore, despite watching probably 99% of F1 races for about the last 23 years (even though I rarely enjoy them anyway!). Sportscars is so much more interesting, especially when you start to try to understand the strategies and get to know about the many people involved.

Any mechanical device can be made to go fast provided it doesn't have to last long. Before WW2, the fastest aircraft in the world were the Schneider Trophy seaplanes (400 mph plus) but none could run lomger than about 20 minutes before temperatures went out of control or components began to break.

F1 cars are optimised for about 90 minutes running at maximum speeds. LMP cars are optimised for running at up to 12 and even 24 hours at their maximum speed.

Should give an idea of the difference in pace between F1 and GT1; I think I'm I right in saying that the GT500 cars are quicker than GT1 cars over a lap, with their advanced aero?

I think GT500 cars didn't have the grunt of the GT1s c500hp plays c600hp, so it might be dependant upon the track.

There was a chap on James Allens website talking about F1 going to New York and that they should be promoting the event by (amongst other things) getting an F1 car do the quarter mile up a world famous drag strip they have there.
How quick would an F1 car do the quarter mile if it was setup specially for it?

Not especially fast, unless it was modified away from race spec (i.e drag radials etc)
