This is Jim. There was no warning. It just exploded. The right steering input was instinctive but it was clear immediately that I was along for the ride. The only thing I was concerned about was getting further away from the wall. Thus starting on the second revolution I released the brakes a little every time I was facing away from the wall and then went to full lock as it came back to face the wall again That is why my right foot is releasing the pedal partly (not completely!) a couple of times

If he had gone off at 180 (which is impressive if they're using the road course!) then I'd imagine he'd be taking a pleasant ride through the countryside that is the tri-oval. Better to let it spin into the infield than risk over-correcting and ending up a cropper in the outside wall.What he said, at that speed its not like sliding around a roundabout and an over-correction could have been painful, keeping the wheel straightish is counter intuitive so well done driver for keeping it on the track and saving the car.

True! I've seen plenty of people come a cropper in Porsche Cup cars on the banking at Rockingham and end up in the wall... and then occasionally across the track and back down head on into the inside wall, so there's definitely a good argument for letting the banking carry you to the inside naturally!Mr_Thyroid said:

The usual problem you see on a banked course is the oversteering car suddenly backing up into the wall. One of the first things you learn doing "rookie training" on a banked oval is "if in doubt - turn INTO the spin". This goes against everything you know about dealing with oversteer, but there comes a time when you just can't correct it, and now is the time to turn it into the spin, so it will go down the track to the infield, not up the track to the wall. Another thing you'll see NASCAR drivers do when it goes past "catchable" is to light up the rears to ensure that it spins down, not up!
This guy was lucky that he was on the tri-oval section with the Porsche, there's plenty of space on the infield to get lost on, without wrecking the car.

Not always a bad idea. If like the driver you can see a nice wide expanse you are heading for then just stamping on the brakes is a way to make sure you get there. Lock up all 4 tyres and the car will carry on in whatever direction it was heading rather than sliding round into something. This technique has saved my car from ending up in a tyre wall.Turn wheel 45 degrees to right. Foot on brake. Wait.
