retirement race f1 best result?

seeing as im expecting rubins to bin it on a glory run tomorrow whats been the best ever finish for a driver retiring from f1? has kimi got it?

Mansell? At least as good as it could have been. Dominant season, won the WDC, and the last race, then buggered off to Cart to annoy Americans.

I followed F1 back then but can't remember the reason behind him ending up without a drive. I'd imagine him leaving Williams was to do with money, or was it Prost, but was there no other seat open?

He did return with Williams in 1994 as one of the replacement drivers for Senna and won the last race of the season, the Australian GP. Then came back in 1995 with McLaren and scored a 10th and a retirement in the 2 races he took part in.

Alain Prost came 2nd in his final race in 1993. Which is the best retirement result I can think of.

Jody Schekter. F1 Champion as well, left to become an organic farmer.

I don't think anyone has gone out on a better high than Alain Prost. He finished second in his last 3 races, already the run away 1993 world champion. That was in a Williams too, but they were a very different team in those days.

Prost does ice racing, Mansell did that Masters series thing. Do they count?

In 1985, it was so nearly Niki Lauda who won at Adelaide. His replacement, Keke Rosberg almost repeated the feat in 1986, but both retired whilst leading.

Alan Jones would've gone out on a high as a winner in 1981, but then he got greedy and came back in 1983 and 1986 for a less than glorious comeback.

Mika Hakkinen could've won his last race, but had a rather curiously low-key 4th place - almost as if he didn't want to be on the podium.....

Let's hope for a 2003 style chaotic Brazilian GP, and Rubens signing off on the top step!

I think most drivers end up doing some sort of motorsport after they leave F1, if only for their own amusement.

Granted he retired from F1, but he hardly had much chance to do anything else did he..
