Any Rally Drivers In?
Discussion
I've had a long held ambition to do a season and have gotten close on a couple of occasions, only for life to get in the way.
However, one of the things that has stopped me is the high initial risk of binning the car as the skill set for rallying is very to different to that of circuit driving.
So my question is how/where you practice? Training days at the various schools seem ferociously expensive when compared to a test day/track day.

Good call there. Not as many held as before as places like Leconfield, Binbrook and Swinderby have disappeared from the itinerary
Jack Frost at Croft in January (I'll be there), Opposite Lock and Harold Palin at Manby, Usually a few at Melbourne as well. Manby is good as there is a good amount of loose as well as the service roads
We are toying with the idea of getting back into it but it might have to wait another year or so for finances' sake

Have you looked at Autcross? It is basically a time trial over a circuit laid out on a field. Would be a good place to learn the right sort of skills:

IMO, a little bit of pre event testing/ practise is invaluable if you can get it. Like has been said, an Airfield type single venue event would be a good place to start, but you have to bear in mind that when you are on an event, the red mist tends to come down, and you go for it, unless you can get course car duties, then that takes any competitive “pressure” off of the driving.
For Tarmac testing at reasonable prices, try Curborough Near Litchfield just outside of Birmingham, its secure, fairly safe, and you can do with it what you want. A decent selection of corners, ideal for getting you hand in. Blyton I have herd is ok for testing too, nearer to you.
Gravel is not so easy, and expensive, I am in negotiations with a gravel Rally test facility near Winchester at present, which if it comes off, will host around a 3 mile good quality gravel circuit.
Sweet lamb in Wales is another, I am sure there are other venues tup norf!
Your are correct though, Rallying is different from circuit racing, ANY testing you can do, will help.
Good luck.

If you want to get some practice without spending too much I would recommend go and see these guys

Tell them what you are aiming to do and see what they can offer you.
They are all rally drivers themselves and they do some amazingly low priced offers compared to other rally schools and you get decent time in the cars (they have 2wd and 4wd).
Autocross is a great cheap way to learn car control, and usually a few rally and rallycross drivers will be out, but its nothing like doing a rally although it will give you a good feel for driving on the lose surfaces.
Greenbelt motor club do 3 or 4 events a year autocross events usually to be found in the NE, Oxfordshire, Essex and Devon, usually around late summer after crops are harvested.
