Marshalling training?

I am a big motorsport fan (would not expect that on this forum now would you?) and never had the talent or money to drive, so am thinking about getting into marshalling as a way of getting close to the action. What would I need to in the way of training?

To start with, you don't have to have any training. You can learn "on the job" but not ideal. However, this is the perfect time of year as most of the training days are coming up and are a great introduction. Whereabouts are you, and what circuits were you thinking about?

I live in Sandhurst so Thrutxon is my closest circuit I guess. I have put myself forward for Goodwood, but this is more crowd control than anything else I understand.

There's some good marshalling info on the BARC webpage and I'm sure that the contacts will help out. The Thruxton training day is tomorrow, so that's not great. Not sure that they allow novices at the Goodwood events (I've marshalled most Revival meetings, and they are busy events), but Thruxton is easy from Sandhurst and it's a good venue. Most of circuit is very very quick..

I've put myself down for spectator marshalling at Goodwood, this is all I can do due to lack of training, hence the reason for seeking training.

Yes, recommend the above. The marshals club link above provides info on training and the process of achieving non-novice status. Even then you may not get selected for goodwood, it's one of the few events where they have too many volunteers.

This might be worth a look, especially as it's next weekend and not ridiculously far away from you (jump on the M4, shouldn't take too long)...

Goodwood is slightly different as you have to be experienced to apply and get an invite - same as with F1 at Silverstone.

For every other circuit you can get 'on the bank' on your first day with no training at all.
