2012 F1 Ferrari - poor or "mind games"?

Apologies if this a re-post; the search is stuck and I can't find a mention in "The 2012 Formula One pre-season testing thread" or any thread title post-dating the start of testing.
There's lot's of chatter that the Ferrari maybe a good car but they're playing it down for tactical reasons. ie "Mind games"
Why would Ferrari play mind games? It's not like RB and Mc are just going to think that as Ferrari aren't great they don't need to bother doing any more development is it? They're fighting each other for a start. Informed commentators have pointed to strange cornering characteristics and strange exhaust positioning along with an unajustable suspension. So is all the "mind games" stuff credible or is it Ferrari fans in denial?

Wife and I were chatting about this last night. I reckon it can only be one of two things - terrible, or amazing. I doubt it'll be average after the fuss their making.
Nicky also said they might be asking the drivers to keep quiet due to the Massa being fired rumours?
Anyway, I'd say it's a good car and mind games - but perhaps that's just my hope as I like the b

ks that goes with F1. Brundle was interviewed the other day on Sky and he said Ferrari have got problems at this stage.
"It's a real handful through the corners".
Of course there's time before Melbourne to correct those problems, if they can in the wind tunnel and simulator.

Ha, sandbagging in pre season testing was a much a part of F1 as petrol fumes and noisy engines, and ferrari were normally at the forefront when such mind games were being played out.
they've been better behaved for a few years now, but wouldn't put it past them... the cars in all likelihood still poor though, but to what degree.

The difference these days IMO is that pre-season testing is all they have - it's not like the old days where they could turn up with a dog at pre-season testing because they knew they could do all the running they liked at Fiorano to make sure they got the actual testing done.they've been better behaved for a few years now, but wouldn't put it past them... the cars in all likelihood still poor though, but to what degree.
As regards the F2012 itself I think that from what I've seen in testing reports that the car is a bit of a handfull at the moment but if they "crack" it then it could be rather quick.

My thoughts too. I admire the bravery of the design and hope it works out to be genious. I'm not particularly devoted to any team but I admire courage and technical excellence. If the car look planted with good grip but was putting in poor times then you'd suspect a bit of sandbagging, but every trustworthy comment Ive read about it's behaviour on track suggests they really are having issues, and I dont think the pullrod front suspension is really a factor, its the rear end aero and exhaust positioning that's causing them problems with lack of consistency etc.
historically, each new Ferrari would lap their track faster than the previous model, and this has gone for the F1 cars as much as their sports cars. This might be a bit of clever psychology but the question that crosses my mind is: 'What for?'
Suggesting they have a dog is not going to mean that red Bull will not go for the fastest reliable car they can. In fact, by suggestion the thing is rocket powered might encourage other teams to take a risk or two.
My feeling is that the car, in the recent past anyway, has problems. By admitting this they may hope to take a bit of the pressure from the media off them. Mind you, i can't see that working either.

Thanks!..Must admit - bit of an odd time for a driver to be leaving! However we all know the Italian temperament.
It's not a matter of italian temperament, should Massa leave now it would be a huge problem for the team anyway.
The problem with Massa is that he always claimed at the beginning of the season to be ready to fight for the title just to show at the first race to be at best a midfielder. Now this and general Domenicali's inability to give a strong direction to the team as per Ross Brawn, let the supporters and the media, at least in Italy say no more, thanks.
As for the car, more than a complete dog, i'd say the real problem is the instability of performance alternating fast laps with poor sessions, this revealing that even the engineers don't know where to act. I don't believe they're sandbagging, not now and not in this way, anyway we'll see shortly.

Quite curious that they've been taking on ex McLaren people and have ended up doing a worse job, especially when you consider McLaren have been slow starters for the last few years.
They'll sort the car out during the season, you do have to wonder if Alonso is getting a bit peed off with it though...
