so has topgear inspired anyone?
Discussion
The inspiring thought it planted in my head was 'if I could drive any car when I was older' comment by May.
Took me a while, Original Ford GT? No. McLaren F1? No. Jag XJ220? No.
Ferrari F40. Yes.
I'll probably have to get cancer and pull on every heart string available, on top of selling my organs on the black market but, it'd be that.
The motor racing idea they have, they can keep.

It did finally put the nail on the coffin for Top Gear for me, took them a while but finally got there!
What was so bad about it that made it the final nail in the coffin? I like the features like this where they all have a crack at a real motorsport. Much better than the scripted barely-car related stuff that they have been doing more and more of these last few years. I thought it was the best episode in quite a while!I hope it does!
Rallycross is one of the most fun per ££ spent you can have in motor-sport at clubman level.
But its not just Rallycross, there are plenty of other entry level series where you can get loads of fun without spending a fortune eg 750 motor club stock hatch, MR2's, Production BMW, Max5 - all for the price of a bag of golf clubs and a silly shirt and golfing trousers!

It may be budget... But it isn't cheap - I did 8k in one year in the mr2 series...and I had the race prepped car already...and didn't have a re-shell - budget racing, but not cheap! LolRallycross is one of the most fun per ££ spent you can have in motor-sport at clubman level.

I'm including all expenses that I had for this down to the bag of sweets and diet coke to get me home on a late Sunday to keep me awake!!
Yup. Had a text from a mate after the episode finished saying we should look into it. It looks like a good laugh, even if it isn't as cheap as it seems at first.

Same here. The closest I have come is being a passenger in one. To be behind the wheel would be something else though. Hopefully I will experience it, one day. Even if its only for a few mins, it would still be epic to drive one. Took me a while, Original Ford GT? No. McLaren F1? No. Jag XJ220? No.

I've been into Rallycross for a few years now, and know quite a few drivers and marshalls (including the driver of the red SEAT Ibiza that was racing on Top Gear, and Andy who did the drivers briefing), and have even helped run cars at a couple of events, and I think the piece they did was brilliant!
Admittedly the Top Gear guys were a lot more competitive because some of the bigger names in Supermodified weren't racing (quite a number hadn't finished their cars ready for the new season!), but the cars they used show the most basic way of getting into the sport, basically using standard cars with a roll cage. I know it does start to get expensive once you start to upgrade the cars but you can do it for less than £2k easily.
Also worth pointing out is there are two different championships, there is the MSA and the BTRDA. The BTRDA is the more accessible of the two, which is the type of event that they were racing in on Top Gear, very grass roots, nothing pretentious about it. Although it's worth pointing out that its not difficult to build a car eligible for both championships, and often the rounds are run at the same event, with only a couple of exceptions.
If you are serious about getting into it, I'd look at the BTRDA site, all the regs are on there for the different categories.
I'm so tempted to do it (I have gone through this every year before the start of the season!), if I did and was properly keeping to a budget of 2 or 3 grand I'd look at a Mk3 Golf VR6

In fact, was I the only man trawling PH classifieds during the feature looking for the most suitable vehicle?
I suspect not.
What would you all get? I didn't look for long but my first instinct was a mk1 172.

There's a saxo same as hammonds, 2owners from new, mint condition, less than a mile from my house for £650. Been for sale 2months. £500 would have it.
Guy owns a boxter and some other PH cars, does all his mechanics himself on a 45degree sloping drive......... So I'd wager it's been looked after.
As for those saying TG was crap..... b
ks. It's tongue in cheek,
and has an element of sillyness. BUT in their defence they did state 3 things:1) that you'd have to do the race license. which they all have anyway
2) that you'd be upgrading the car and spending money
3) that it was epic fun. All of them were visably extatic. Far more so than when in a super-car on some of the scripted stuff.
Even our lass came out with:
"reckon we could car-share on that?"

1 car, entered into two sets of races?

I think it was the first time in a long time i saw very real 100% excitement from them, not something scripted or exaggerated just for the show. These guys have driven every super car under the sun, but for this episode it seem such real enthusiasm. Its nice to see them pushing motorsport and track days in this series, which to be fair to them i also enjoyed the feature on. Much better to see them thrashing some cars about against each other than blowing up a caravan, so credit where it is due, this season has had some good features.

I was thinking pretty much the same. Its nice to see them pushing motorsport and track days in this series, which to be fair to them i also enjoyed the feature on. In the past it's been 3x cars costing £150K+ and blasting around europe, using thousands of pounds worth of fuel/hotels/camera gear/fancy shots/thousands of miles.....All for a gigle.
This week, was so much more entertaining, and visably fun. All three looked to have epic fun.
Jezzas choice made me giggle, as mud and a E36 328 was never going to end well was it?
