How good is he, actually? This year so far he seems to be consistently under performing - which is on top of quite a few seasons when he hasn't exactly set the world alight. Is he just another #2?

Maybe its just my imagination but since DRS was introduced last year I've see him getting mugged an awful lot by it on the straights. Today and Turkey last year in particular plus a bunch of other races too.

He's done 110 races and got 5 podiums - I think the description would be 'solid'.
So given that MSC is likely to retire this season (again!), what do Mercedes do?

Some of his qualifying performances point to having genuine pace, the preblem is the merc chews its tyres compared to other teams and that leaves rosberg going backwards in the race.

Paul di Resta.. or try and get Vettel when his contract expires.

Although if Mercedes have a good year Schumacher might stay another year.
He is driving really well at the moment.

Well he's super fit, can drive F1 cars at the limit ( Youngest driver to set the fastest lap: 20 years ) and holds a PHD and has lots of cash, and his bird is quite fit.

If he soundly beats Hulkenberg this seasos, then I'd say that's a very likely move if/when one of the Mercedes seats become available.

The problem for Mercedes is that they want to be and should be one of the top teams competing for the championship, not just the odd win here and there. To do that they need a proven winner in the car - if Schumi retires again, just who are they going to get? Raikonnen (although on current form why would he want to), or as others have mentioned, a big pay packet to a perhaps unsettled Hamilton, or maybe if Schumi hangs on until Red Bull get bored of F1, then Vettel will fancy being the king of the German super team (from Britain).

Maybe an outside bet on Webber at the end of the season. Schumi's contract expires so he may retire, Webbers expires at RB so he's free to move...

I thought it was well known that Merc are looking at Di Resta to slot into Schumi's seat when he gets bored, given he's their protege, although Schumi might be about for a while longer if the car continues to show promise. I'm sure there was a rumour that McLaren were interested in Di Resta as well, although they have a strong lineup and a good setup for the time being (barring some silly strategy calls).
Had high hopes for Rosberg after his debut season, but recently he is becoming the new Heidfeld. Can't see Vettel going anywhere; Red Bull have bankrolled his career for a while now, and he's got a good team around him so there's not really a reason to move.

Depends where Hamilton goes/stays. They need to get rid of Rosberg and put the Force India drivers in there (if Shumy retires too)

I'm going to reserve judgement on the merc until after the race...remember Hulkenberg's pole on 2010 :-)

He's rarely been awful in qualifying but it's getting it to the finish at the front, that he's less successful with.

so far he never seems to be in a competitive car when it counts. I think he is quick enough to win, a long shot at a championship if the car is right but as said otherwise he is another quick nick. Mind you he doesn't seem too different from jenson a few years back.
