Manufacturers on Podium-F1

After watching the race yesterday it got me thinking, why was the guy from Mercedes on the podium at the end. I know he was from Mercedes Motorsport but I don't think he should have been. 

I have thought this a few times through last season and yesterday was a good example of it. Yes Mercedes won the race but mclaren with there 2/3 scored more points overall as a manufacturer. Then how come they don't win the manufactures award for the race? If you see what I mean?

Don't know if there is a answer for why this is!

Because the car they built won the race? Because its a team sport and its not just the drivers blood sweat and tears that go into the cars?

Pretty simple to understand.

The manufacturer award goes the the team that won the race. There's nothing more to it than that. The teams usually send up different guys each time they win.

I think what Arbs was saying was that if you took that single race as a constructors' championship in its own right, McLaren would have won since they amassed more points in the race than Mercedes. Effectively that means that, from a team point of view, McLaren actually won so why didn't they get the 'manufacturers' win' trophy? It's a fair point actually!

But yeah, it's a first place thing, not 'most points'.

McLaren gained more points but they didn't win the race. Points per place is an artificial construct that can and always have been buggered about with, but a win is a win is a win.

I suppose a team championship would be a solution to this. You could complicate matters even further and let the engine manufacturers fight it out.

perhaps constuctors points for first should 1 more than 2nd plus third ?
