Would be very interested to know how the different era cars rank. Caurrently they are not that fast in a straight line but just how much slower than the fastest types are they?

I'm betting the last of the line v10's smashed this speed also the 1.5ltr turbos and the old v12's of the early 90's.

Ignore tyre

Was at Silverstone in 90/91 & those Fezza V12 engines were just chaos on the senses. Also the Mclaren V10 was up there. The sound would make the air in your throat & chest cavity tremble, & that was at the top of the Hanger Straight, right next to the fence! Never ever forget it. bow

Be very interesting to compare figures. yes

Was a brands the other week and testing was a camel lotus. Asked senior mechanic said it was running 850bhp and about 575kg I believe and on huuuuuge slicks. Sounded absolutely godly tearing around on its own! Put money it must be quicker accelerating than todays breed

The fastest is probably one of the launch control cars. The last V10s had around 900hp too iirc.

0-150 is just a function of gearing, so the real question is probably one of power; I would therefore suggest one of the last of the turbo-era cars. The 1500cc BMW engines in qualifying trim were reputed to have more than 1200bhp, but for no more than two laps! No engine before or since had more grunt, AFAIK

What then, is the 'fastest' F1 car that could actually complete a race? I do mean, of course, fastest straight line speed rather than today's 'slower' cars that can corner faster than the older cars. Still one of the turbo era cars?

No it's not. It's a function of traction i.e. tyre technology and TC AND power. I'd wager the last of the full slick cars as they also had full TC too.

Yeah, think it'd almost certainly be one of the last wide slicked, turbo era cars. 1300bhp and slicks so sticky you could stick them to each other. The modern day cars may corner better through the development of chassis technology, but this is 0-150
I think both the BMW engined benettons and renault cars of 85-86 were maybe even 15-1700bhp in super qualifying trim. Only good for a couple of laps though
I wonder what sort of 0-150 we're talking here, 7-8secs ish ?

The 2006 Renault was the fastest 0-60 at 2.1 seconds.

0-150mph was probably the 2004 Renault.

I don't think the turbo cars would be quicker IMO. They look like a absolute pig to launch off the line, my money would be on the last off the V10s with the launch control systems. Although less horsepower, the ground they would gain just by hooking up 1st gear would leave the turbo era cars behind.

For example:

2005 start

I highly doubt a turbo era car could launch that quickly.

I suppose the latest cars will be way off the mark given engine regs etc and the fact that they're carrying 160kg of fuel

The BMW turbo engine was good for an estimated 1300BHP, talk of 15-1700BHP is rubbish.

Some one else might want to double check my figures but 1300BHP at 9500RPM is about 2350lbs ft of torque!

I remember a few years ago reading that a F1 car could do 0-125-0 in around 5 seconds, if correct that's unbelievably quick!

Not sure how speed compares but I know in terns of sound out of all the F1 cars past and present at Goodwood FOS the modern f1 cars sounded absolutely phenomenal far better than the older cars - just my opinion of course.

I will never ever forget crossing the bridge over the track as the renault went underneath bouncing off the limiter. I was about 8ft directly above the car, felt like it rearranged my internal organs, just awesome!

Just double checked, 718lbs ft of torque.

I'd multiplied the BHP by the RPM divided by 5252 instead of BHP multiplied by 5252 divided by RPM.

His R25, the last of the V10s, was quicker and tuned for 19750rpm at Suzuka (lump known as the Suzuka screamer)

In that spec I'd imagine it's the quickest non-turbo car
