Cheap Motorsport
Discussion
I believe the saying 'cheap motorsport' is used far too often. To me £1500 on a car plus FIA Stuff etc are too much. Add to that track hire, insurances, tyres and all that jazz is ridiculous!
My brother has a 1.3 ford ka with the 60hp duratec engine, we lowered it using springs from ebay £34 and it's a right hoot to drive, full throttle everywhere, the fear of impending death and the fact that it smokes when you stop (I don't think they're designed to do 111mph downhill on the m11 with 35st worth of men in them!)
None the less. I am about to buy a Nissan Micra, lower it and strip out every bit of cheap plastic, spare seat and hubcap I can. My budget, £400. This way we will have 2 similar cars for a competitive, fun safe race, if we crash then it happens! I propose the following for anyone else interested, we're based in Essex.
- Buy a car . 1.3 litre or less and less than 1000kg standard- £400 max purchase price and there's a lot to choose from. (no rx8 of a friend)
- Do what you want to it, you're allowed to use general tinkering, air filter, de - cat (if you can afford it) lowering springs what ever you want but no more than £200 on modifications.
- Urrrm, help us find a field and lets have a race?
Who needs thousands!

Tell you what , how about I take out a bit of life assurance on you ? I will pay the premiums and give you a couple of quid to lower another Micra then you will have 3 cars to race !
Obviously I would benefit from the insurance payout in the unlikley event of your demise during your foray into ' cheap motorsport' !!!!

If it wasn't for the 111mph down the M11 comment you'd have got some help, what you are suggesting already exists (sort of).

Why is it illegal to race round a field, surely as long as you have the owners permission you can do it
Exactly what I was thinking ?! They do loads of endurance races in fields across the country, even grass track sprint etc

(I'm guessing, I don't know either)
Dear the OP, the comment about 111mph is bloody stupid.
If you are 19 years old and on your first car, then well done, you have passed a milestone in life, because at that age everyone acts like a c**t in their first car.
If you are an adult then. . … well, I’ll keep that opinion to myself.
Anyhow.
What you suggest is not as straightforward as you think it is.
To do any sort of motorsport on private land you the land owner needs a sort of licence.
This needs to get approval for noise, safety and all sorts of other stuff.
If any money has passed hands to rent the land then there are even more things to consider.
When/if there is an injury there will be a police investigation and the person responsible may find themselves libel under H&S Sort of rules.
If it realy was as simple as finding an old field and going nuts then we’d all be doing it.
But it isn’t that simple.
Your best bet is to take you nuts little car and try and get on some airfield days or hill climbs.

I'm glad someone could be bothered to type a straight answer. I know I couldn't!If you are 19 years old and on your first car, then well done, you have passed a milestone in life, because at that age everyone acts like a c**t in their first car.

Why do you think you need to spend £1500 on a car and fit it with FIA approved safety components?Join your local motor club and you can enter 12 car rallies and autotests for peanuts in any car. For a bit more you can enter your road car into a hillclimb or sprint. That means you CAN do proper organized motorsport on a pretty small budget.
Ragging a couple of cars around a field may be fun, bit it's hardly motorsport.

We don't have that "folk racing" thing that was on Top Gear in the UK AFAIK. Which is probably what the OP really wants.
