British GP Tickets 2013 - WTF!!??!!

I was at Silverstone earlier this month for the Grand Prix, I think it was my 9th. After what was basically three months of rain I didn't moan about the weather, the mud or the state of the car parks. The only downer was that a McLaren didn't win.

Unfortunately I won't be making it 10 GP's due to Silverstone turning greedy.

I sat in Club Corner Grandstand. A ticket that cost me £315 + £7.50 in booking fees. I do realise that this is a lot of money but F1 is pretty much the only sport I follow and I do attend all three days.

Generally Silverstone release tickets in stages so I visit the website to get an indication of prices and fk me! The fking s are out to fk us right over. They have now split Club Corner and the International Pit Straights Grandstands into 4 different price bands. My seat that was £315 this year is now £355 for next, that's 12.7% increase.

They have also played about with what the 'early bird' discount applys to. For the 2012 event early bird General Admission was £130. This year no discount is available on this type of ticket, and it's £165, that's a 26.9% increase.

I know several people who can't afford these prices so always go for Friday only (which incidently have been a washout for the past two years), again no early bird discount.

Now I know they have to pay for that nice new Wing somehow, but putting prices up this much in a huge recession quite frankly isn't on.

That's not good. After this year's shenanigans at Silverstone, I've decided to take an active interest in following motorsports other than F1. Although I still follow F1, I don't follow it enough to get messed about like this year. The main attraction this year for me was the prospect of seeing so many WDCs and the season itself being so exciting. Silverstone/the weather was the great party-pooper.

When I looked around, there is so much going on local to me that, made me realise that there is a lot of fun to be had. In fact I went down to the local outdoor kart track on the Saturday of this years F1 event (I bought GA/car park tickets for qually). It was absolutely bucketing it down, but I so loved sliding the kart about in the wet. First time experiencing full throttle and full oppo coming out of a corner. Lot more smiles per quid than getting stuck at Silverstone and being unable to get in or worse get out! In short, I won't be going next year.

Give the WEC a try this year if you can make it.

FREE Car Parking
FREE roving ticket for under 15s

6 hours of racing, great support races and you can enjoy the headline race throughout the day from many different vantage points. Knocks the F1 into a cocked hat IMO!

Or try the BTCC weekends, around £35 for three days, pit access all included, or around £50 with the camping...

The early bird price for Friday is clearly stated on the website as being £49 and £65 thereafter.

or £70 for four days at Santa Pod for the FIA/UEM European Finals.

I don't see how F1 can justify their pricing either.

To put this pricing into perspective

1 years season pass to Brands Hatch Bike and Car which includes admission on all days including BTCC and British Superbikes.

Just around £220.

I was thinking of doing a different race to silverstone next year as i have been 2 years running now.

With the prices going up even more, i think i shall be going to either belgium or germany.

With a bit of luck I am off to Italy for the last V8 F1 race in 2013.... I think rev limited V6's will be the end of live F1 for me and my family / friends

I did notice the prices seem higher for Silverstone compared to other circuits when I had a quick look recently (for this season), will be checking more carefully if the overseas race starts to look feasible.

Apparently this is to aid developments in road engines. Hmm. I can really see a turbo tiny capacity V6 making it into road cars in the near future.

The thought was that with the change in emission regs the only way to get within them without risk of reliability problems was to go for super/turbochargers, hence the initial surge in pressure boosting. Now, it would appear, that it is possible to get within the emissions with normal development.

Shame, I like the idea of superchargers, especially the ones that scream.

But what it means is that we go into 2014 with outdated technology. Not that it matters, I suppose, but the justification is rather empty now.

I've done both Silverstone and Monaco. Monaco is worth the trip due to the whole circus of the event (and the weather)

Silverstone was.. OK. F1 racing in 2012 is a million miles from getting racing value for your money. It's not easily accessible (pits etc) and the racing isn't great from a single viewing point.

Personally, F1 at Silverstone isn't worth £150, let alone over double that.
