Open up telemetry in Formula 1

Wouldn't it be a great idea if we could access the basic telemetry for all the F1 drivers? I found this comparison between Button and Hamilton fascinating. If you could see corner exit speeds etc for all the cars, Martin Brundle's talk about "he's got a new wing on today" etc would be more relevant to me as a viewer. If the minor teams could use it to level the playing field as well, great.

Basic telemetry, yes, agree 100%.

They do release throttle, engine rpm, gear and KERS but a little more would be fun...

The most interesting for me being in Monza paddock and pitlane was seeing the difference between the top teams and the smaller teams. Those guys at the back of the grid get such a small slice of the pie, I think the distribution of money should be far more even. But surely sharing of data is never going to happen ?

Would be interesting if FOM invested in other type of kit other than just cameras... some laser speed devices for corner exit, etc?

They did have apex speeds at one point, but for some reason got rid of it. Shame as it was interesting to see who was bravest through the quick stuff

I think you can assume that this is the HRT drivers, on every track

It was most impressive in Turkey when they showed that JB was slowest through the speed traps on the straights, but his apex speeds were about 3 KPH higher than anyone else.

I find the data very interesting and spend a fair bit of time looking at my own and others data.


I had 2 drivers at thruxton, and on the face of it they were identical on their lap times.


but looking at the data showed one slow and one quick through different parts of the circuit. getting them both to adjust to where the other was quick made a massive improvement to their lap times

It's not easy unless you can see the colours easily - but the critical lines ( there are 2 sets of data overlaid here) are the top - the darker blue is Jenson and the other line which runs close to it is Leiws. You can see the darker blue line is higher on the graph ( higher speed ) than the other.

That dotted line shows where Lewis is loosing time to Jenson. He looses on the straights but gains back a bit in the corners. But not enough

The other traces will show gear changes and braking
I think that's right but reading data is much easier when you have the graph colours

from top to bottom it's speed, time gap (dotted red line), steering angle, gear, and throttle and brake pressure overlaid on the bottom trace.

Like so many things in life, contrary to popular belief, it is NOT rocket science. If you or anyone is sufficiently interested and motivated, you can learn to understand these things and again, like many things in life, it's easy when you know how.

Right I'm off to set the Valve Timing on a VVC Cylinder Head. There was a time when that would have been rocket science to me .. .. until I found out how. Like I said, easy when you know how.

Maybe they should open up all of the basic stuff, but not reveal whose it is? Or, by lottery, say, four teams are required to give anonymous access at each round?
